Ford truck/van with 4.6 owners. Crank, no start

Have a work van. Been great. Has close to 300k on engine but has every service record gong back to new. Clean and I like to keep my engines so I can eat off them.
Anyway. Put about sixty miles on it today without issue. Leave a job and it sounds like I'm running out of gas.
I have a half tank and there is pressure in the fuel rails. I can hear the fuel pump come on.
I can get it to turn over, but it won't catch.
With starter fluid it will start and die.
So sounds like a sensor.
Well of course I can't find my scan tool. So I wanted to ask on here and hope I can find someone who knows.
Oddly I'm kind of excited. I'm a shadetree mechanic, but I haven't had a vehicle breakdown in six plus years. Get to do some greasy work. More fun than appliances. Lol
Has to be like a crank or cam sensor though? Right? No way all eight injectors are bad.

Be unlikely it's all the fuel injectors.

Does the van have a fuel pump driver module like the 4.6 F150?

Check your crank sensor, seems like it is gone.

Would almost bet my life it's the plug wires. 4.6 is notorious for popping the coil, wires and plugs on the older year models. I had an old 2001 Expedition and replaced plugs etc 3 times. Google what I'm saying.

The distributor pickup coil could be bad. Replace with a Motorcraft part or suffer the consequences.

If it has a chain, it sounds like it stretched enough to jump timing. One tooth off will keep running if already started but will sound like shite & idle even worse than it sounds. Once you shut it off, it will not start again.

check fuel pressure before you do anything. A few pounds low can cause your symptoms.
If it was the crank or cam sensor it wouldn't run with starting fluid.

That's what I plan in the morning.
It tries to start rumbles and then dies.
Want to check the pressure.
I can hear the fuel pump but still could be clogged or restricted. I need to find the schrader valve and test it.
Then I have a voltage sensor that is contactless, was going to use it to verify voltage to fuel injectors.
I haven't looked into this engine much. I knew my way around the foxbody 5.0, but I never had a 4.6 before.
The CEL coming on is what makes me think it was a sensor.
Before it died, it ran really rough with the CEL.
I pulled over. Then called roadside assistance.
Great places to start though, thanks guys.

I'm fairly sure the engine is the same as the F150 in most ways.

What you mention is the worst case scenario and I hope to hell not. Geez, last thing I feel like doing this weekend is an engine front rebuild.

What year is it? The F150 got a fuel pump driver module in 04.

just googled that part and most people said " I spent $400 changing fuel pump, then towed it to dealer and found out it was a module". I'll look at that. Trying to find a FSM or something similar online.

You have a fuel pump driver module. On a F150 its mounted on the left side of the frame above the spare tire. Not sure where it is mounted on a van. The module aluminum body corrodes allowing moisture to get to the electronics. On a F150 it's easy to check by dropping the spare, removing 2 bolts, and look at it. The module is about $50 if it's your problem. It's very common problem.
Edited to add: On a van the FPDM is mounted to the inner side of the frame rail on the driver side forward of the rear wheel.

Could also be a faulty inertia switch but my money is on the FPDM.

reading up on it, the problems sound like my issue. I forgot about inertia switch to I just red the schematic and saw it inline to the driver module.
Looks like I can also check fuel pressure without a gauge. Can get voltage readings from wire from pressure sensor to PCM.
Also of course with computer.
First step will be read it with computer.

This is most often caused by either a faulty fuel pump driver module or a faulty inertia switch , checked the wiring carefully at both of these Verify power is present to and through the inertia switch with the key on, engine off. The inertia switch is located behind the passenger side kick panel. If power is present into and out of the inertia switch, access the FPDM and verify battery power is present to it on the White wire from the inertia switch and fuel pump relay. The FPDM is mounted to the inner side of the frame rail on the driver side forward of the rear wheel.Verify that the Black/Orange wire is supplying the FPDM a good ground.
I have owned nothing but Ford 4.6 F150s since 1998. Currently driving a 06 w 160,000 miles. I got a PDF of the 04-08 Ford F150 service manual if you need it.
