The state’s GOP leadership named border security a high priority this session, largely because of the influx of undocumented immigrants from Central America who came to the Rio Grande Valley last summer. But the two chambers were about $300 million apart. They ultimately settled on a $800 million package, with $750 million going to the Department of Public Safety. Much of the funding will go toward paying for a 50-hour work week for all DPS troopers, adding 250 additional DPS troopers to the border and keeping the Texas National Guard on the job while those units are trained.
