Go zip lining at Soaring Adventures at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. Then hike up Seven Falls and eat at the restaurant at the base of the falls. Makes for a great half day.

Two hour drive from Denver but we enjoyed going over to Buena Vista for a rafting trip.

but Colorado is the best summer vacation spot imo. Unreal amount of outdoor stuff to do and not 100° out to dampen it.
It is a great summer vacation spot but Oregon's got more to do.

If you are staying in Denver area, Rocky Mtn National Park and Estes Park is closer than going down to Royal Gorge and Pikes Peak.
Also, west of Denver is Mt Evans which is about like going to top of Pikes Peak. Red Rocks is west of Denver as well.
Vail has a nice adventure ridge the kids might enjoy and checking out some of the ski resorts, most have summer activities like Jeep tours and fishing and white water.
If you did go to Pikes Peak and Royal Gorge area I would white water raft there.
Estes Park is neat and they have a marina you can kayak or rent pontoon boat at Lake Estes or do some hiking, if that's your thing.

Take a ride over to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park if you get a chance. Beautiful views from top of the canyon, etc...
I realize the thread is a few months old but we went to Denver then to a wedding in Crested Butte in August and loved it. We spent 2 nights in Denver then 1 night camping at Paradise Divide in Crested Butte, if I could do it again I'd have added 1 more night camping somewhere else. It was my first time in Colorado and I can't wait to make it back.

I spent a week right outside of Estes Park a few summers back. Didn't realize it was such a big deal of a place til after. Was a cool little town.
