Galaxy S8 "most breakable phone of all time"

Soon after its release, electronics insurance company SquareTrade put Samsung's new flagship phone through its breakability test, a series of drops, dunks, and tumbles. It was deemed the most breakable phone of all time: "S8 is the first phone we've tested that's cracked on the first drop on ALL sides," SquareTrade wrote in a video demonstrating the drops.

I thought flexible OLED screens were supposed to be shatter proof. While that screen may not be shattered, it's definitely more beat up than you'd expect from a "shatter proof" material.
And this isn't a Samsung vs. Apple thing, the next iPhone is going to have the same screen and then of course the rest of the phone manufacturers will follow. Are we ever going to get a phone that doesn't need a case?

i was going to upgrade my wife's 5s to a 6 after the screen cracked for like the 5th time and the little guys who work on the screens said the 6 series were WAY MORE FRAGILE than the 5 series.
Awesome. I thought the whole gorilla glass v2, v3, etc was supposed to be mixed with epoxy polymers to make it stronger and more scratch resistant.
I guess the cracked screen business is the new 'blockbuster late fees' and 'ink jet refills' for the phones.

"but but but you can't expect the new phone to go perfect gaw"

I'm fixing to upgrade to the S8+ or an iPhone 7 Plus. One thing that I don't like is that there are no integrated screen cover type cases (otterbox defender) that will work with the S8 due to the curved screen. A lot of people are also having a hard time getting the plastic film type covers and tempered glass type covers to stay on the curved glass of the S8 phones also.
I can't drop that type of money on a phone and not fully protect the front and back.

I purchased an otterbox case and Otterbox's Alpha Glass screen cover when I got my S8. I dropped my phone yesterday for the first time, fully protected, and the Alpha glass shattered, but the screen on my S8 is still untouched. I'll be sinking another $30-$45 on a screen protector to say the least.

Do they not have cheap replacement plans for the glass protectors? I know I can get mine replaced for like $5 if it breaks.

Unless they come out with some special type of temp glass, or they already have something like it, there will always be this problem of lines on the edges of the curved glass. Really sucks.

I got the Moto X Pure a couple of years ago when it came out. Loved the phone but hated the curved display because it made it impossible to get a tempered glass screen protector on it without some type of bubble/inclusion on the edges. I decided that would be last last screen with curved glass because I consider a tempered glass screen protector manditory on my phones now. I hope this trend for curved glass ends soon.

The screen in that pic looks a hell of a lot better than one on the iPhone 4 when dropped.
Not sure how anything can beat the 4 as most breakable

The phone in the pic looks like is survived pretty well considering they obviously dropped it a bunch of times. Hell the screen isn't even cracked across the entire screen and the display is still working.

That screen looks like a million bucks i tell ya

I'd have to see it to believe it. The Nexus 4 was the Mr. Glass of the smartphone world.

We could and we have. People bitched about the bezel, battery falling out when you drop it, plastic construction, etc. Now we take a sleek all metal/glass phone and add a case that adds a bezel, plastic construction, etc.

On this note my Oneplus One was maybe my favorite phone ever. The sandstone texture means it NEVER slipped out of your grip. You could replace the whole outer case when it got dinged up. Throw a tempered glass screen protector on the front and you were good to go. I ran mine sans case for 2 years. Probably my favorite phone of all time. Would still use it if it had Tmo bands 2 and 12.

What do you expect SquareTrade to say?
They sell phone insurance.

Another reason I like my BlackBerry. Better made phones.

Samsung's Active line is durable enough to not use a case, imo.

Agreed, but it has the "cheap" plastic construction and a bezel w/ a slightly recessed screen just like the protection you would get with a case. We run a few in the field and they have held up very well.
