Lake Charles Area Trout Fishing

I'm going with a couple of guys to speck fish in Lake Charles in a few weeks. I have not been speck fishing in quite a few years and I have never been fishing in Lake Charles.
I am not looking for anyone's "special spot" or anything like that. I would appreciate any tips and tackle suggestions though. I grew up mainly using live / dead bait for saltwater. Very rarely did we ever use artificial, which I have been told is more popular in that area.
Any of you gents been fishing in the Lake Chuck area for specks lately? Do you mind sharing your lures / baits of choice? Thank you.

The water will probably look like chocolate milk after all of this rain. Black Lake may have decent clarity but it will be very fresh, the same with Joe's Cove.
If I am going to go I always have a Bone Superspook topwater for early in the morning; Matrix Shad, Norton's Sand Eels, or Lil Johns for jigging; and a Mirrolure Catch 2000 or Mirrodine suspension baits. I also like to keep a popping cork with a Voodoo shrimp handy in case the fish want a slower presentation. Get live shrimp at Spicers or Calcasieu Point if they have it.
Report back on how your trip goes. I am going next weekend

I'm going next weekend, not this weekend. Do you think that will be enough time for the water to settle back down and clear up?

You please do the same.

I have seen the lake clear up in 3 days if there are no strong winds so maybe.
I always check HERE to get the daily satellite images of the lake. If it's a clear day you can see which parts of the lake are clearer than others. If you go back to May 2nd you can see that the lake is pretty clean except for the south end of the lake by the ship channel.
Plus if all else fails, bring some extra beer on the boat to pass the time. Any day on the water is a good day.

If you get a couple days north wind before your trip, leave boat at home and hit the beach

in a few weeks, if for SOME REASON the day prior and day of is North winds, the surf may not be a bad idea. The further you go west, the cleaner the water.

Top water....all day! When you tired, drink a beer and then continue. You might stick a big one!

Do yourself a favor and fish far enough east so you don't run up against the idiot 15 fish limit.

Have fun catching your dink 12-14" trout. I would almost be willing to bet that 15 fish caught in big lake would weigh the same as the 25 you catch.

that's rapidly changing, it's hard to catch trophy trout in BL now. too much fishing pressure

Yea,no. I have fished from Sabine pass to Venice and I will match trout from anywhere against big lake ANY time.

Lol. There are some trout fisherman in lake Ponchartrain that would adamantly disagree with you. I'm not talking guys that post pics, go on message boards, etc.

Not saying big lake is the best. I was responding to the clown saying 15 trout from big lake is better than 25 from anywhere else. Best I ever caught was at the Rigolets BTW. 9lb. 5oz. On a live croaker

I used to love fishing in big lake. Would this OP have any luck at the jetties?
