Allergy shots...are they worth the cost and drive and wait at doctors office?

I'm tired of getting these 3 day long stints of being sick. They seem to be from allergies. The aching weak body, slight fever, running nose, can't sleep, sinus pressure takes me off my normal routine once every one to two months. My mom swears by the allergy shots where they inject you with what you're allergic to in small doses to make you more immune to getting sick. To those of you who have done them, are they worth the cost and drive and wait at doctors office weekly/monthly to get them? I have pretty good insurance.

They helped out my son a lot. Its been a while since he was doing them but I believe it ended up being like $25 a shot once insurance kicked in.

It has helped me with all the nagging allergy colds I used to get.
When I started out, I was getting shots in both arms every week. After you get through the waiting period it's not bad.
Over time I went down to going every other week and now I only go once every 3 weeks.

Check with your insurance, most will cover them.
You will have to go to an initial apt where they skin prick you and see what all you are allergic to (you will end up being allergic to every tree and grass that grows around you)
After this they will get your vial created to suit you.
You will start at a shot (sometomes 2, sometimes 3) once a week
After about 8-12 months once every 2wks
After anorher 8-12 months once every 3 weeks
Most stay on them 5-7years then their body is adjusted to the allergies and they can get off
I took shots from time i was 5 until when i was 15 then again 6 years ago, and just got off of them.
YES they work, takes several months to start but once you are on them you will get sick alot less frequent

I had the same exact problem you had and started taking allergy shots and I never get sick anymore. I do suffer from chronic post nasal drip so that still sucks.

I did the shots for around a year and 1/2. I haven't had one in about a year. Very seldom do I get sick now. I'm allergic to every kind of grass. I can cut grass now without having an allergy attach. They seem to work.
They are correct, I had to get 2 shots a week for 6 months. Then it went to once a week. Then every other week.

It's strange that you get sick from allergies, were you fed formula as a baby?

Find a Dr who will let you do it yourself. My Drs office had an allergy clinic in it for a while and I went and got tested and learned to give myself the shots. It was much more convenient and definitely helped me. The clinic closed, but not before I finished. I've heard there are a few allergy docs in BR that allow you to do the shots yourself. They teach you how to do it and you go in the first few times, but once they feel you have gotten the hang of it, all you do is go in and get your med and Rx refill for the syringes.

Been doing the shots for 1.5 years now and it's been working great. Never had allergies until about 5 years ago and it was a serious drain on my quality of life.
I did "cluster shots" which is a relatively new way to do it. After going in a couple times a week for the first couple of months I now just go in every 4 weeks. Not sure if this is true everywhere but I don't need an appointment when I go in for my shots - I just walk in say hi and I'm done in 5 minutes.
If you constantly get sick or just feel like shite due to allergies it's 100% worth it.

This is normal and typical after the first couple months of shots. Mine offered. I'd rather not deal with needles.

try addressing your leaky gut. Can't hurt.

Because it is much safer to have done at a doctors office in case of a serious allergic reaction to the allergy shots whicy could happen at any time. I have personally witnessed 2 patients go into anaphylactic shock in the clinic after getting shots. They have all of the steroids and epi on hand and know how to deal with it. This is something serious that you do not want to encounter at home.... or i dont.

Allergy shots can be helpful for the "right" person.
Obviously, you need to get started with allergy testing to see what your allergic to. There's a lot of people out there with non-allergic rhinitis as well, which can prsent with similar symptoms and won't respond to allergy shots.
You can also try medications first: flonase/nasonex/rhinocort, astelin/dymista, singulair, sinus rinses etc. which may control your symptoms without having to do the allergy shots over several years.
Also depending on what your allergic to, there's a few grass ones that are sublingual (in the mouth). Sublingual is very popular in europe, but a lot of difficulty in getting it FDA approved in the US for various reasons.

I get them once a week. There's no wait. I just walk into the allergy clinic, sign my name, get shot, and walk out.
You can also look into sublingual immunotherapy drops that you keep at home and take under tongue once a day. Insurance doesn't cover it though.

My wife gave up on them after about 6-10 months. She had a few bad reactions to the shots, basically anaphylactic shock.
Hers were more due to pet allergies than pollen and stuff though.

This is why you dont want to give yourself shots at home

In short, no. I took them for the better part of three years and never noticed any change in my allergy issues.

I had to get them weekly for years when I was a kid. I eventually out grew a bunch of my allergies and stopped having to go. The waiting around part sucked
