Guess this explains why Marc Stein, Chad Ford and Henry Abbott got fired
Adrian Wojnarowski to ESPN

yeah I don't think the news on there layoffs hit until late last week

Wonder if he brings Shams along with him. Maybe Mannix?

Woj is great and all but I prefer Stein.

I'd assume so on Shams and I'd guess Givony essentially gets Ford's job. Hopefully not on Mannix, he's pretty useless.

The article said that there's plans to, just didn't mention anyone by name, but I would imagine those two lead the pack
I think Stein is more professional and does a little more research while Woj just drops whatever he hears

Fire a bunch of notable employees because your company is bleeding money, then hire a highly paid NBA insider. Seems like a smart move

I mean, it is. They fired a bunch of guys and then got the best guy out there.

Not saying Woj isn't awesome at his job, because he is. The timing couldn't have been worse though, from a PR standpoint.

Not to mention I think Woj and The Vertical tend to the younger audience more than Stein and co., who are like the old school kind of guys

It's not like firing all those people was going to have a massive difference on ESPN's bottom line. It is more of a message to shareholders that they're shifting course.

Agreed. This kind of hiring can't be good for the overall morale at ESPN. They just shite canned a ton of people ostensibly b/c they can't afford them. To turn around and hire one of the highest paid NBA guys around just days later is an extremely tone deaf move.

Simmons would call this the classic "3 for 1" trade; bad move IMO EVEN though Woj is a hell of a pull and has great staff.
Would you Trade Lebron for Mike Conley, Paul George and KG?
Ford, Stein, Abbott, Strauss (budding talent), and truehoop brought such an unique and sort of subtwitter subreddit niche and appeal to NBA coverage in general. If feel like the NBA is the only pro sport that has all these little niches --- there is something for everyone; entertainment guys, fashion guys, jocks, stats guys, press/journalism Guys etc.
Dropping those guys and not replacing them hurts the NBA ultimately. I wouldn't ve happy if I were the NBA

Woj is obviously the best at relaying behind the scene/inside info. However, I've never been a fan of his actual basketball takes and opinions

It might not come across as the best PR, but ESPN has to go all in on NBA coverage right now, and the Vertical/Woj has been the go to for a huge amount of NBA fans.

Yea the guy is a total hack who will take out whoever his buddies ask him to. But he's unrivaled with the breaking news.

None of them are Woj.

They didn't die, they'll go somewhere else.

Which is likely why they're bringing others from The Vertical along with him. He definitely is far from the best NBA writer (I think Bleacher Report actually has some of the best writers, which I bet is where Abbott winds up), but that's why he brought on others
