..that was supposed to be its blockbuster, but flopped instead, while the other film, Star Wars, went on to receive all the accolades?

Nope.
Most consider Close Encounters of the 3rd kind to be very successful.

Wizards or Damnation Alley.

Damnation Alley it is...
Post-production editing delayed it so they released Star Wars first. After the success of Star Wars they delayed it even more, trying to add more scenes with the landmaster ATVs. They cut out several critical scenes to add more of the ATV action.
Eventually released in 1978 and flopped.

I don't even remember Damnation Ally even though the late 70's is in my wheelhouse for movie knowledge. Looked it up, and can confirm that it's cast wasn't great. Their Luke, Jan-Michael Vincent was a terrible actor and George Peppard was no Han Solo.

Oh God
I wonder what a Damnation Alley nerd would look like after all these years in the alternate universe where it was a big hit.

Nobody talks smack about Jan Michael Vincent.

It had giant radiation soaked cockroaches, so it had that going for it.
Production values that clearly kick Star Wars in the nuts.

JMV now lives in Vicksburg, MS and had a leg amputated below the knee due to peripheral arterial disease.
