New Years in Austin or New Braunfels

I'm staying at Schlitterbahn. We are doing a day trip to Austin (the Oasis restaurant for dinner... even though it's cheesy). The question is, do we do the day trip to Austin and hang out for a fireworks display (if they have one), or do we hang out in New Braunfels (and see if fireworks are done there). Any suggestions would be appreciated as well as tips for the area in terms of sites to see etc.

Assuming it's a family trip?
Both are great. If you have kids Austin has some cool stuff for theM. You can go by town lake and see the bats then stick around for fireworks.
I love New Braunfels so I'm biased. They have a part of town called Gruene which is on the Guadeloupe river. It's an old school strip of shops and restaurants and the legendary gruene hall. We always do dinner down there at Grist Mill or gruene city grille
Kids love it and they have live bands and plenty of beer. Lol
You will already be in Austin for dinner so it really just depends on if you want to be close to the hotel after fireworks or if you want to poke around Austin.

I second the idea for a trip to Gruene right down the road. I live in SA so it's not far and i visit often with the SO. IT's not as quaint as it used to be but still very charming. Enjoy the trip

Are you sure you mean New Years and not 4th of July?
Lakeway will have a big fireworks display, but it is kind of far from New Braunfels to be there at midnight and trek back.
Gristmill is good. Depending on your age, Gruene has a lot of little antique shops.
Myron's for steak. (a little classy)
Alpine House restaurant is neat. Worth a quick google.
