Would you be in favor of a 5th or 6th round pick saving 7.5M cap space next 2 yrs?

2.5 million this year, 5 million next yr, we got to resign that Drew guy who's pretty important and needs a defense etc.
I present Austin Rehkow, number 1 punter on board.
Very accomplished place kicker as well if ever needed.
Could easily replace Morestead's production and transfer his cap space to positions of actual importance where increased production is needed.
ESPN Stats Link
more accomplished than thomas' career at southeastern mississippi university.

I think we are all assuming Morstead will heavily restructure at some point. He's still one of the best punters in the league. I would hate to see us give him up.

its paycut or get the stepping. its obnoxious we're paying 4.7 million plus a year on a punter

i see that chad's hard-on for morstead is as rigid as ever

He has been an elite punter for his entire career. I would focus on trimming money being spent where we aren't getting the appropriate production in return.

he's been very average more years than not. difference between a top 4-6 punter and a punter top 5-10ish is not worth that cap space. its pissing money away. we hard balled drew fricking brees over his market value 10x's more than the money they through out the window to thomas morestead.

Exactly, he's actually very good.
There are plenty of players that suck.

I agree with chad for once

We are literally paying millions for a 2.5-3.0 yard average gain for thomas' most productive seasons vs an average middle of the road punter. And that is assuming you guys think the top punter in a draft will just be "middle of the road". Hell, we haven't even valued making field goals which put direct points on the board with our cap space.

You may have an opinion on whether he gets paid too much or not. But the above statement is simply ridiculous.

Drew's % of the team's salary cap was off the freaking NFL bell curve (29% versus 24% for the 2nd highest in the NFL - this is roughly from memory). This was the case for 2 years and we couldn't build a team around him because of it, among other reasons. So this isn't really a fair comparison imo.

Man what a phenomenal gig. Pretty sure they just go kick around for a half hour or less and then just work out.
He'll even when punters frick up nobody really dwells on it for THAT long.

True story.
Saints won the Super Bowl with a rookie punter that was 29th in the NFL with net average and 17th in NFL with punting average.
Generally, his net average has been a bit more impressive than his actual distance average on punts. Probably punts a bit more hang time... Saints cover teams have to get a bit of credit for that as well. I've never been overly impressed with morestead's pinning accuracy. He's mr. punt it to 10 yrd line like clock work when sometimes you'd expect a bit better pinning when you evaluate his contract.
I'm averaging his net avg/and distance avg ranking in nfl from every year:
2016 5.5
2015 13.5
2014 5.5
2013 5.5
2012 2
2011 3
2010 9.5
2009 23

These are net average rankings of the punter of the Super Bowl Champions since 2009. Literally every year, the super bowl champion punter was ranked LOWER and sometimes Much lower than where Thomas Morestead ranked for our team that season.
2016 Pats 7th
2015 Broncos 21st
2014 Pats 12th
2013 Seahawks 19th
2012 Ravens 8th
2011 Giants 15th
2010 Packers 18th
2009 Saints 29th
There is literally zero evidence that the punting game is worth spending ANY of your valuable resources on. It's a fricking garbage waste of cap when millions are critical in the depth of other certain positions.

The flip side of that true story.
I'd argue that net average is a much better indicator of a punter's quality as compared to actual distance. A punter that boots is 20 yards longer but into the end zone is much less effective than one that pins opponents inside their 20. The same can be said of punters who outkick their coverage and allow bigger returns.
So below are Morestead's net punting NFL rankings:
2016 5th
2015 10th
2014 2nd
2013 3rd
2012 1st
2011 2nd
2010 11th
2009 32nd
As you can see, from 2011-2016 he has been ranked in the top 5 every year but one and in the top 10 every year. In 4 of those 6 years he has been ranked in the top3. IMO that is significantly elite and deserving of getting paid. Now, you might be right that $4.6M is at the upper edge of what a punter is worth. I won't argue that. But I think we are getting elite production from the position and would focus my attention to the many other areas where our production is lacking. That's the only point I'm trying to make.

Obviously a good punter who makes millions, will help your team.
The stats you posted are interesting.

If we were better on offense we wouldn't need a punter...Draft all offensive players so that we never have to punt, cut Morestead, and on the rare occasion we might ever need to punt, let Brees do it.
Posted on 4/13/17 at 1:16 pm to PokerPlayingTiger
good for you now compare those numbers to the super bowl champions ever year since net average is most important in winning.
Posted on 4/13/17 at 1:18 pm to Chad504boy
Would be ironic to have the offense humming along the defense greatly improved only to have "the shakiest punter in the South"
