re: Remember when the MSB thought it was time for Roy to retire?

I don't think any 1 and done type player actually cares about winning a natty in that year
JMO. I probably wouldn't. Especially if you come from a poor background.

Now if they'd just say, I'm going to UK so I have a better draft spot after my one year here, I'd fall for that

I wouldn't say they don't care about winning the championship but that absolutely isn't their motivation during that one year
Posted on 3/27/17 at 1:02 pm to WestCoastAg
Yeah I don't think it's their motivation when they are picking a school either
Posted on 3/27/17 at 1:04 pm to craigbiggio
Being able to win a championship in that one year is absolutely something you can do at kentucky and is definitely a reason they get the players that they do

Point is, some probably don't give a shite, of course. Others, it may not be their top motivation(it's probably staying healthy/maxing out their draft status), but they are definitely motivated to win a title, no doubt about that.

I'm sure making the final four is exciting and emotional
that doesn't change anything though. 1 and done players don't go into it thinking natty. They are already Mercedes shopping before they even get to campus.
Posted on 3/27/17 at 1:17 pm to shel311
I'm sure if a title comes along with being a 1st round one and done, they're even more excited.
Do you think any 1 and dones would trade being a 1st round 1 and done for a title and having to stay in school longer? I don't.

Again, it may not be the top thing on the list, but for many of those players, they definitely care about winning, even if it's for selfish reasons.

you can argue the semantics all you want. I understand high level athletes want to win.
the entire point in this debate is that kracka said he doesn't understand why these high caliber players still go to UK. I do understand why. It's because they want to be drafted in the 1st round. If they win a title in that year, even better.

I am with you here. That is why i wish people would just stop saying that these players A. have a better chance to win the natty going to UK. B. Care about anything more than where they are getting drafted.

I don't doubt a players emotional connection to a team they are a part of. Especially after the way they lost. But our point is, when they are committing to UK, it's not because they want to win a natty. It's so they have a great draft position when they are done after their one season.

I don't think anyone is arguing that. We are arguing that players shouldn't commit to UK saying that "I want to go to UK to win national championships" just say, I want to go to UK so because Cal can get me to the league. If they want to win championships, they would be better off odds wise, going to Duke.

It's pretty crazy how Roy gets legit good players to come to North Carolina and stay for 3-4 years in this day and age.

it's not all that alarming if you look at the guys. I am surprised that he was able to keep Justin Jackson as long as he has. And that he kept Brice Johnson as long. Carolina must be actively saying in meetings, "look lets go find guys that are borderline that we can build the program on who won't be gone in one year. If they break out and leave after two, fine. But we want 2-4 year guys." There is no other explanation for their recruiting strategy and results.

If you were a one and done player. And you wanted to have the best possible chance to win a natty and get in the lottery. Where would you go? UK or Duke? play along.....I am just curious at which you would choose.

Since Calipari took over, yes Duke does have 2 titles to UK's one. But Duke has 2 Final 4s. UK has 4 with 3 title game appearances. So I think that's a wash, your chance at a title is virtually even at either school IMO.
