Shepard Smith claims that the National Weather Service lied

about snow totals for places like NYC in the Blizzard a couple of days ago. Some places got less snow than predicted, while others got what was predicted. The NWS opted not to change the forecast, though they knew totals might be lower, because they feared changing them at the last minute would cause confusion for the public and people would let their guard down. Reasonable explanation in my opinion.
Not for Shepard Smith, who now rants about something on a daily basis, claiming that the National Weather Service was purposefully misinforming the public.

The thing is, Shepard Smith, and other people who are being critical because there was less snow in some areas than predicted, don't actually know what it takes to put together a forecast for a major weather event like this. The communication involved is immense, as each NWS office in that region had to communicate to put together concise forecasts. We have other weather enthusiasts here, so I'd like to hear your opinions.
Also, Shepard Smith is no longer a premier news anchor. He has turned a show that is based on reporting news, reading headlines, etc. into another opinion/ranting show.

He's bitching about erring on the side of caution? What an idiot.

Climate change skeptics are a strange bunch.

Yep, pretty much. They wanted to be cautious and also avoid the confusion that would have ensued if they had changed the forecast at the last minute.

Well weather services do get a hard on for severe weather, and I imagine it's because their viewership skyrockets. I love when a weak hurricane rolls through, and they send out a reporter to point at sticks in puddles.

I would say he can go choke on a five gallon buckets worth of dicks.
But he'd like that.

Mostly cause they don't understand the difference btw weather and climate.....

Is this the same Shep who said everyone on the East Coast of Florida for Hurricane Matthew will die?

I didn't read the Step portion of the post. From what I saw, the NWS did a fairly good job on conveying the uncertainty associated with the forecast for the I95 corridor. However, models showed a warm layer above the surface in the final run up to the storm and it was obvious that the risk of sleet and even rain was increasing. Snow totals probably should've been dialed back for areas from DC to Boston. The system produced record breaking snows inland but the risk of heavy snow in the major I95 cities rapidly decreased as the system organized.

The National Weather Service doesn't have ratings they have to keep up, they aren't The Weather Channel, so what you said doesn't fit with what I am talking about here.

You're correct, they could of dialed back totals, but I understand their reasoning in leaving them alone. It frustrates me to see someone who doesn't know anything about weather, like Shep, criticize them for doing what they thought, in their professional opinion, was best.

Shepard Smith would feel more comfortable at MSNBC.

SS is as much a drama queen as the NWS

It is common knowledge that Shepard Smith is an idiot; the Ol Piss alum status should be enough evidence of that.

So the meteorologists saw that the computer models that they relied on changed the forecast, and they elected not to change their official forecast as not to confuse the public, right?
Well now the public has lost confidence in the official forecast, and the next time people might not react properly and there will be a big mess.
Reality is politics get in the way of science, and the people were misled on purpose. Haven't we seen a lot of the same with the global warming debate? The narrative can't be changed even though we see the data does.
