This series typically gets great reviews and has a very passionate fan base.
Why is it so beloved?
I have yet to play an entries in the series but hope to one day.

Been around for awhile.
Storylines are always decent.
Characters are pretty well structured.
I prefer Shinning Force personally but I played the hell outta fire emblems in my early days. Especially Fire emblem Gaiden for the Nes

Story has heavy impact on gameplay, and they are usually pretty good JRPG-ish stories.
I'm partial to Ogre Battle/Tactics Ogre, but I haven't seen a game in that series for like 15 years.

It's the foundation of the paper, rock, scissors turn based strategy games. Best asset are the characters and the permanent death gameplay. You become very attached to them because they can be gone forever.
Overall story is pretty meh but it's easy to find characters you like.

This. So many characters.
One of the better game series of its genre but is still pretty overrated.

I had never played a Fire Emblem game until the gamecube one, and then the sequel on the wii. Both had a ton of replay value based on the number of characters you could get and different strategies. They were a ton of fun, and a new one for the Switch is one for the reasons I'm looking forward to the system.
On a side note, my house was broken into a few years ago, and the guys stole all of my games. I've been wanting to get those games again since I still have my wii, but used copies sell for $100 and up. I love the games, but not that much.

They're good strategy RPG's and that's not a genre that's exactly oversaturated.
Solid mechanics, an interesting mechanic in permadeath, and a bunch of characters. Like other people have said, the story is never really the draw. I like the series, but meh is about as far as you can go story wise.

And these are just from the last two games. Impractical battle clothing (see Lyn), outrageously hot characters, a lot of dialogue driven character relationships blah blah blah.
It's basically chess in Dragon Age clothing. You can imagine that Japan's take on medieval Europe would be a bit....off. Being able to marry whomever you want and have a kid is another draw of the game to the weirder people. Fire Emblem is commonly referred to in the hardcore fandom as the "Waifu Simulator."
I'm sure that retard from the Nier thread is gonna tell weaboo at me sooner or later, but other than it's blatant sexual influence and extremely high school-ish plot, it really is challenging and a fun game once you get used to it. Gives you choices to spare or kill characters as you please throughout the main stories. Like I said earlier, if you like chess and unexpectedly well rendered cutscenes, you'll like this game. If you're looking for anything more then....idk what to tell you.
Why do I know all this you ask? Well, probably cause I am a die hard Emblem fan <33333
