re: NASA: new solar system , Trappist-1 ,where life may have evolved on 3 planets

No we don't.
Yes we do. The fact that life didn't reoccur once is staggeringly unlikely. It's a statistical fact that there is other life out there. OJ is more likely to be actually innocent than for there to not be life out there somewhere.
quote:
The statistical set of planets that we work with contains 1 planet with proof of life and ~1300 planets with no proof of life.
1300? What the frick are you talking about? New planets are being discovered every fricking day. There are trillion upon trillion of planets and worlds. The sample you are presenting is total fricking bullshite, and you have to know it if you aren't a total moron.
quote:
We cannot confidently say that this set of planets is a representative subset of all the planets in the universe...
With trillions of them and large proof on other worlds in our own solar system that they exist, yes we can. These circumstances had to have replicated themselves at least a few times. It's a statistical certainty.
quote:
We can only begin to extrapolate the frequency of life containing planets once we have a second data point that is NOT in the null set. We currently only have 1 point that is not in the EMPTY S
Which very theoretically could be Mars. The planet is naturally producing methane when it is theoretically dead. How does that happen aside from life? It's by far the most likely reason it is actually producing methane. The fact that we're somewhat sure Mars has some bacteria on it at least means it's probable on worlds across the universe.
quote:
I'm sorry but there is no evidence of life on any planet outside of earth.
You're ignorant then. Explain the methane on Mars. All scientists say life is the most likely reason for it. I do think there are living organisms on Mars, so that proves it's common throughout the universe.

quote:Why does everyone buy into that Fermi bullshite? It's literally just some crackpot idea that some PhD put out and now everyone thinks it's the end all be all of alien theories. Earth being the only planet with intelligent life in the universe is just as likely as that theory.
I think that Fermi is probably right as I said above.

It's a better and more complete theory than most but I agree that it's overrated and has plenty of (self-acknowledged) holes.

Plenty of alternate hypothesis to the filter: maybe it is too expensive to spread physically throughout the galaxy, maybe Earth is purposely isolated, maybe it is dangerous to communicate and hence civilizations actively hide, etc etc. All of which the fermi author concedes as plausible.
As in the article that I linked, these are all possibilities. Along with several more. But the outlook is pretty grim. But the space is unimaginable as is the time span. We could certainly be in a unique position.
I wonder if there were millions of civilizations that thought the same thing before being vaporized from a thousand light years away by a gamma ray burst from a neutron star.

I mean a supervolcano is almost certainly going to blow before we found a sustainable colony on an independently habitable planet. I didn't need Fermi to tell me that.

quote:I don't get why it's a good or complete theory. Granted I'm not a mathematician but seems that the interstellar travel being an absolute impossibility and there being millions of intelligent civilizations out there that are all stuck in their own solar system is just as likely, if not more.

Lol! No you don't.

Theoretically, it's not. And you don't need a wormhole to do it. You could travel up to nine times the speed of light and still stay within the laws of physics. However, you'd need huge amounts of energy and mass to fold space both in front of, and behind the vehicle. You wouldn't be technically moving the vehicle. You'd be moving the space.
This still doesn't really allow intergalactic travel. The trip just across our galaxy would take thousands of years. However, who knows what breakthroughs are coming in a thousand years?
Think of where we were just 500 years ago...hell, even two hundred years. We aren't even children. Embryonic isn't even close if other civilizations are a million years ahead of us. As I said before. The spaces and time spans aren't really comprehensive to us. I really hope that we are the first. But I seriously doubt it.

No, not at all. Just based on simple math, that's not even remotely true
Posted on 2/22/17 at 11:23 pm to MississippiLSUfan
I believe there is other intelligent life out there. I just think the Fermi paradox is bullshiy.

That part I understand, but I still don't understand how they can get any information on the planet aside from its size and density. I don't understand how looking at our own solar system from 40 light years away that you could tell much of a difference between Earth and Venus.
They just simply figure that the planet has a similar size as earth and is located a distance from the star that would make climate on that planet livable. So therefore it's "possible". Does not mean the planet has the atmosphere to create water and such

think they said 40 light years. So pack a tooth brush and a shitload of TP.
At least we know they'll have that good brown beer when we get there.

How do they know there are planets there? They can't see them can they? Are they not too far away?

OK, They don;t actually SEE the planets, but they can see the changes in reflected light when the planets pass in front of their sun, they can also measure the "wobble" of their sun - the gravitational effects of these planets on their sun.

NASA should absolutely be given more funding.
NASA is the worst idea ever for a nation which claims to eschew socialism completely....NASA is the best tool you can use to cause a worshipper of free enterprise and only free enterprise to want to change the subject to one of the weather...something that person would know less about were it not for the collective effort of NASA, by the way.
NASA is the antidote to the poison that all government is all bad all the time....man had several thousand years to travel to the moon and other than a few starry eyed dreamers never once made a serious effort...then along came a bunch of communists and lo and behold all of a sudden the capitalists went from nothing to landing on the moon in what, 40 years total or less??? And the capitalists did it COLLECTIVELY and have enjoyed the benefits of that investment thousands of times over since....in fact the very medium which allows me to write this and allows you to read is a result of that collective effort...GO COMMUNISM!!!! (that is sarcasm for those of you in Mississippi).

Yep, people need to come to grips with that the universe is full of life. The universe itself is alive like the Earth .
