my point was that there was no good winner that year:
I've always thought Saving Private Ryan wasn't a complete movie. Great war scenes.

or just give the Oscar to Pulp Fiction because it should have won years ago.

The Right Stuff losing to Terms of Endearment. :(

8. At the 2007 ceremony, the rap group Three 6 Mafia scores an Oscar in the Best Original Song category for their song: "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" (from the movie Hustle & Flow), beating out the heavily favored Dolly Parton song, "Travellin' Thru" from the movieTransamerica.
This is my favorite. They milked it for all it was worth. Years after winning, their songs still start out "academy award winners"!

3. Many people were dumbfounded when Chariots of Fire defeated Warren Beatty's magnum opus Reds for Best Picture at the 1982 Oscar ceremony.
However most of those listed were not "shockers" at all:

quote:This was also much-predicted before, that there might be an anti-Brokeback backlash. Was not shocking at all.
7. At the 2006 ceremony, Crash scored an upset for the ages - beating out the heavily-favored Brokeback Mountain in the Best Picture category
quote:Both of these were predicted by many observers
5. At the 1999 Oscar ceremony, Gwyneth Paltrow (Shakespeare in Love ) beat out the favored Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth) for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Elizabeth is still considered by many to be the finest performance of Blanchett's career.
4. Another shocker from the 1999 Oscar ceremony was Shakespeare in Love's surprising upset of Saving Private Ryan in the category of Best Picture.
quote:This was the opposite of a shocker. According to Kane editor Robert Wise (present at the ceremony), Kane was booed every time it was mentioned during the award announcements.
1. And the biggest shocker of all? Well...maybe when it comes to hindsight, but How Green Was My Valley's Best Picture win over Citizen Kane at the 1942 Oscar ceremony looks worse and worse with each passing year

From who? Your local grocer? Dolly Parton was the odds on favorite to win. Many people were shocked, including Academy insiders, when Three 6 Mafia pulled off the win.

It was very shocking. Crash was only the second film in Oscar history to win Best Picture without even being nominated for Best Picture at the Golden Globes. Not to mention the fact that Brokeback Mountain had won every major award leading up to Oscar night (Golden Globe, PGA, DGA, and every critic circle award known to man). The only thing it didn't win was the SAG Award for Ensemble (which naturally went to Crash because that was an ensemble piece). There's a reason why Jack Nicholson exclaimed "Whoa!" after he read off Crash's name when he announced Best Picture that night.

A few at best. Hardly many.

I guess you missed what I said in my OP:

quote:Well I wasn't terribly shocked. I'd read beforehand that some rap shite might win, and was properly outraged
Many people were shocked, including Academy insiders, when Three 6 Mafia pulled off the win
quote:Again, it was predicted by a number of observers that there would be a backlash against BM. I certainly wasnt't shocked
There's a reason why Jack Nicholson exclaimed "Whoa!" after he read off Crash's name when he announced Best Picture that night
Compare this to Chariots of Fire, which I believe was predicted by one person (Andrew Sarris of The Village Voice). He brilliantly foresaw On Golden Pond and Reds cancelling each other out, and letting COF slip through.
quote:What does this mean? That Kane should have won? That's a different discussion. Kane losing in 1941 was definitely not a surprise.
And the biggest shocker of all? Well...maybe when it comes to hindsight

I believe it was Jon Stewart who was hosting that year and said right after "if you're keeping score at home, that's Three Six Mafia 1, Martin Scorsese 0.

Children of Men not even being nominated for best picture was fricking stupid.

Should have won over the Departed too

Ordinary People and Redford over Raging Bull and Scorsese aren't on the list?
Posted on 2/8/17 at 3:11 pm to Solo
There's very few things better for a film's critical reputation than losing the Academy Award in a perceived close ballot. And few things worse than winning in that fashion.

Ordinary People
Why does Crash get so much hate and this is always glossed over?
At least Crash was somewhat entertaining (albeit sometimes for unintentional comedic effect.)
Ordinary People is not only the biggest downer of a film...it's a nothing of a film...it's a short story...it's not even half as good as In the Bedroom (Which also is tremendously mediocre but similar themes and similarly lauded.)
Every single film nominated for Best Picture that year should have won over Ordinary People...every one.
Especially Elephant Man and Raging Bull...even Coal Miner's Daughter and Tess.

Mary Tyler Moore put on a fantastic show. I don't think I have ever seen someone as cold and heartless as she played which was a complete 180 to her normal character.
I could watch Ordinary People 100 times to 1 for that vile piece of shite crash.
Not saying Ordinary deserved best picture but the acting and story were leaps and bound better than that excrement of contrived race baiting crap.
