Looking into an assignment at work that would put me in Brussels, Belgium for 24 months. Looking for any info or advice on Brussels or just moving abroad in general. Thanks!
ETA: Wife and two school-age kids will be with me.

Hope you like hordes of displaced terrorists.

Maybe Kevin Faulk or Stevan Ridley will jump in and answer your question.

Learn french. 2 years is a long time to stumble over language.
Walloon language after you get there if you find that you are getting into their region, customers.

No big deal, just make sure wife/daughter cover their faces 100% of the time

Start family on french immersion

Do it. I will make 50 countries visited this year with the kids coming in at 30+. Many great family memories are and have been made. You won't regret it.
Downside is if you have elderly parents or your kids are the only grandchildren in the family then it gets a bit tough at times. Skype and sling box help a lot.

Yeah I would probably do it too. Brussels wouldn't be a top choice but you're close to Holland and France and other spots in Belgium.

May want to throw this over to the Travel Board, good info over there and less water heads

Do it, if your company is half way decent they are not going to put you in a dangerous situation. The schools will probably be very good, there's a great chance your kids will basically learn french and know it the rest of their life if they continue with it in school. Belgium is very centrally located so you'll have a lot of very easy weekend trips you can do.
Yeah the muslim thing is an issue, but you can deal with it. Just don't be rocking American Flag shirts and what not.

It will still be way safer than any large American city. I've been to Brussels several times and never saw many burkas, etc or felt unsafe, etc. Of course you wouldn't want to go into Molenbeek just like you wouldnt go into any american ghetto area....But I did go into a muslim housing project in Amsterdam last summer for a street art tour. It was no big deal....the worst things about the muslim housing projects, like amercian projects, is the crime, not the terrorism.

Remember you can only use the term ex-pat if you are white, otherwise you are a skilled immigrant.
