The only coach I saw Trent consistently outcoach here.
We already have a 50-something coach (hell Rich may be closer to 60) with very little personality who has landed some big recruits but quite honestly doesn't always get the best out of them.
Let's get a guy who can coach, but is young and energetic with some enthusiasm who can actually wake the LSU fan base from it's coma re: basketball. Our last 3 coaches have been either very unlikable (Brady) are bland and void of personality (Johnny and Trent).
The inconsistency has been the main culprit in fan apathy but the lack of personality from the head coaching position surely has not helped.

Johnson was 3-5 vs Stansbury that's not outcoaching him. The guy went to the tourney 11-14 years he's won a single season sec championship 2 sec tourneys 5 west championships holds the career wins totals at miss st. single season win total (27) and finished the year ranked number 2 in the country one season at (26-4). He recruits louisiana like crazy and has an impressive list of NBA and college recruits as an assistant and head coach. With Alleva as AD we'd be lucky to get Stansbury.

Stansbury is a good coach miss st was always a top 3/4 sec team while he was there. When we still had divisions he constantly won the sec west. Went to the tourney 11 of 14 years, 5 west titles ,1 outright season title and 2 sec tourneyment titles Knowing Alleva I'd say this is the safest hire.
Would LSU have an advantage over MSU in regard to talent, though? This was why I was so high on Mullen to replace Miles. If these guys can be "good" at MSU with their situation, would they not have more opportunity here? Stansbury was pretty consistent, too.

Yes by a wide margin. A lot of his recruits come from louisiana the kid from ATM that dominated us a week or 2 ago is a stansbury recruit from louisiana for example. He has a 5 star 7 footer from chalmette committed to him right now. When's the last time LSU has had a 5 star 7 footer? Louisiana is one of the top states per capita for producing NBA players we just don't hear about em because they don't come to LSU. If we hire Stansbury he'll get most of em.

They signed in November but haven't played yet. That's weird. Not sure how bound they are. Would the still have to sit for a year?
Why is that weird? College Basketball has an early signing period. Unless academically ineligible, the player is contractually bound to the university if he signs a NLI.

And how old is Stansbury? Why did he leave A&M if he had so much success there?
Stansbury is 57 and wasn't a HC at A&M.

Obviously you didn't watch the games and take into account the pitiful talent Johnson had (through his own doing mind you) vs. what talent Stansbury had. Hell I think Johnson's second or third year one of his 3 conference wins was a stunner on the road vs. a vastly superior State team and we often in that time played State very close when we should not have because Stansbury unlike every other team we played went under ball screens and didn't pressure Stringer who could not handle the ball at all that one year he played point. I can remember thinking,"what an idiot". He really did outcoach him if you look at it realistically.
Whatever success he had at State, he squandered some talented teams most of the time. He had a good assistant who used to handle the X's and O's for him whose name escapes me and when he left the underachieving began.
As for his recruiting, I just don't think that's enough and he's a bit long in the tooth. I think it would be a mistake to go with a re-tread and another coach with no personality to a program people have already quit caring about.
Young, enthusiastic and energetic....that's my desire.

I'm not certain that the coach can release the player with full autonomy in regards to the athletic dept.
If the AD at WKU sees Stansbury getting attention from larger schools and then all of a sudden he wants to release a 5 star center (prob the most heralded recruit that program has had in decades) from the program he is still employed by, that AD won't just sit by idly and let it happen without getting involved. There are also sometimes terms/restrictions associated with granting player's release that could make it difficult. In the end the kid can sit out a year and go play anywhere he wants, but I think the scenario proposed in the OP may not play out as cut and dry as some here think it would.

Even when Johnson had great talent his first 2 season he couldn't beat stansbury. However you want to manipulate what happened the facts are Johnson was 3-5 vs stansbury with a -24 point difference and Stansbury beating him by double digits multiple times including a 17 point whipping. Johnson never beat Stansbury by more than 2 points so no he didn't outcoach him. During Stansburys tenure he had the second best record in the sec behind Kentucky and ahead of billy Donavan and Florida. Saying you wanna go young is fine but your basis arguing against Stansbury is 100% wrong and we'd be lucky to get him. Just watch what happens if we don't.

Obviously he's better than JJ, but I wouldn't doubt there are posters here that could outcoach JJ. This would be another lazy, low-upside hire by Alleva.

Good post. Agree. Upgrade over Jones no doubt but that's not saying much.

Man this would be so awesome. I am ready to get excited about LSU basketball again. I don;t expect championships, but making the tournament and having a shot at the sweet sixteen seems like a resonable expectation.

It was 6 of 14 years with 5 NIT appearances. My biggest issue with him is that he faded down the stretch despite some talent he still had.

Just who outside of Zimmerman did he bring to Moo St. that was noteworthy?

It'd be dumb as hell to hire a so so retread as head coach just for a one and done.
Posted on 1/20/17 at 8:51 am to saintsfan22
Robinson from Chalmette is going to be a one-and-done...we certainly don't need to go through that again

This was discussed when the article came out a few months back. I'm sure this is nothing more than Stansbury's agent seeing the writing on the wall re: Jones and trying to get his guy in the mix. Of course he'd rather be a SEC HC as opposed to a CUSA HC.
I always thought he was a bit underappreciated at MSU. He was on Billy Kennedy's staff last season and obviously knows the recruiting landscape of LA/MS. He wouldn't be the worst hire in the world and he certainly would be better than Jones. He just wouldn't be my first choice though.

There's nothing wrong with having one and done's but locking into a coach for one is dumb. Highly doubt Alleva knows who Mitchell Robinson is so if that's Stansbury's trump card I don't see it working for him.

Traditionally the blue chips had the highest value at the table, although that's not really the case much anymore.

He went to the postseason 11 times. 6 NCAA and 5 NIT. Still would be an upgrade over what we have now.
