re: No more Mike the Tiger in Tiger Stadium? WTF?

Based on this decision and half the comments on this thread, LSU is turning into one gigantic (and stupid) vagina. Whoever made this decision should be fired immediately. Let the damned snowflakes melt!

It shouldn't be though. PETA and other such groups have no authority over the LSU Athletic Dept. Just ignore PETA
It's not PETA. It's finding a tiger sanctuary willing to donate one. Many of them, including the one that gave us Rosco, have been shut down by the government. The ones still standing are going to take a long look before handing over a tiger.

So, you can grind up pig entrails and serve them to kids at the games, but you can't keep a tiger in a million dollar habitat around the corner. OK

Why are most people passing over this part:
whether LSU is able to become an accredited tiger sanctuary. The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries has the most rigorous accreditation standards, with one expert calling it "the only legitimate accrediting body," and another calling "the gold star" of accrediting agencies.
This will make it MUCH easier to get a tiger going forward?

How many times has he been in the stadium in recent years? Maybe once, twice in the last 4 years?

There's no reason to put a scared tiger in a giant stadium for small entertainment value.
IMO being accredited a tiger sanctuary is a much better bragging right.. At least if you don't have a small peen.

Per the advocate- it's necessary for sanctuary accreditation

Trump will fix this in the first 90 days
He's going to get us a Tiger and he's going to make PETA pay for it.

I am also in favor of getting him a young good looking Michelle the Tiger to live in his cage.
If you knew anything about tigers, you'd know what a terrible idea this was.

This takes away the arguments of PETA and other groups.
You can't do this, though. Their ultimate position is they'd rather have no tigers at all than tigers in captivity. You can reason with extremists - it's not possible.

I'd rather they quit all of the pregame fireworks that stress out the tiger than get rid of the tiger.
This. Mike stationed at the mouth of the tunnel is way better than fricking fireworks.
"The lion" is certainly intimidating, especially when he roars as the other team exits the tunnel.

I'd really like a Vote: who prefers fireworks and who prefers a tiger mascot for pre game? I want the live mascot in a cage.
This is a bogus proposition. The real-world choice is either a) we get to have a tiger but can't bring him into the stadium for 15 minutes pre-game, or b) have zero more Mikes because none of the sanctuaries will donate one.
Which would you choose?

Read the Advocate article linked by the OP. Also read through this entire thread. It's apparent that Mike means different things to all of us. Before Mike 6 passed, it had been years since he attended a football game. I've watched four different videos of Dr. Baker give media interviews at Mike's sanctuary - a man that has dedicated a good chunk of his life to preserving our tradition of having a live tiger on campus.
Its clear to me that Dr. Baker supports this concession, and I don't think he's a p***y.
Up to about 1600 years ago, people who considered themselves the most civilized in all the world watched tigers kill (and be killed by) less fortunate people in stadium environments. They had circuses too, but their circus looked more like our racetracks of today. Speaking of the circus, here's some more real world knowledge for those of you who melt when somebody moves your cheese.
Ps. If we park Mike's empty cage permanently by the visitors locker room, hide some 500 watt speakers under it, get an audio clip of a roaring tiger and rig it all to a motion detector...? Your earlier post about the guy in a tiger suit cracked me up.

He is not? What, he is there to watch the game? Of course he is there for entertainment - that is the whole point.
Do we have him jump through rings? Is there a ringmaster with a whip? Times change.
I would suggest that Dr. Baker, his associates and Mike's caregivers have a more personal and enlightened view of this than you.
However, if we want entertainment why don't you volunteer to stick your head inside the next Mike's jaws.

We are lucky to have Dr. Baker
Time for us to move on from the game day tradition, and be accredited sanctuary. That has more educational purpose and will serve the University better.

This. Put mike inside cage outside of stadium not on game day. Film him pacing around and roaring. Make the walls of the tiger cage LED screens. Play the video on a loop hooked up to some hidden speakers in the opposition tunnel as they are coming out.
I'm all about having a new Mike, whatever it takes to get him.

In 2017, taking a live tiger into a stadium with over 100k cheering isn't happening. It will be tough enough to get a tiger as it is.
You rationalize whatever it takes to live with it/. Truth is, it's complete bullshite that all these past generations of LSU Fans got to enjoy Mike in Tiger Stadium, but because of a complete pussy generation who cave at everything, future generations just got the screw job.
LSU Admins can now hang their hat on it, because they own it. It's their legacy/.

Keep giving in to their crap and we will eventually find ourselves fighting to even have a tiger.
