We have better ER, shorter response times

Not if you get shot in NBR. There is no longer an ER capable of taking GSWs(gun shot wounds) in that area.

Sucks though for an innocent bystander that was the victim of a shooting because they just happen to be poor and can't afford to live in the safer parts of BR.

Maybe it's because I am older & more aware, but I do not feel safe going to Mall of LA or stopping to pump gas on O'Neal Lane after dark.
Seriously? I get gas at the Cracker Barrel across the street from Does in mid city and never fear for my life. Actually get to hear good stories from the crack heads after I give them $0.50 when they walk up on me pumping gas.

I don't go into BR at night unless I have to, 10 years ago I wouldn't think twice about it.

I think violent crime is up but since its mainly in the hood I don't care. Burglaries are a little more concerning to my everyday life.

So murders have skyrocketed, I revisited the original post. Any ideas what has changed in the city?

Change in Government leadership, apparently no one steering the ship, the announcement by the Feds on Sterling, inciteful inflammatory statements by local activists who were supposed to be keeping the peace, and a general disconnect regarding empathy and basic morals in the areas that carry the burden of this type of violence, for starters.

"safer parts" are getting worse in B.R.

With SWB in office and people like Slinky Slim on advisory boards the entire parish is going to suffer. I wouldn't even want to be on the periphery.

Maybe it's because I'm older than you and more aware than you but I feel even stronger about this than you do.

I will not go anywhere in the city limits after sundown.

I try to stay away from the city proper completely.

I used to date girls that lived in the city, mostly N.B.R. and went to bars, movies, etc. in my younger years.

N.B.R. was almost all white if that tells ya' anything. There was a pocket of black people along Acadian over to Olympic Stadium. Not much of the big 3 crimes there in those days.

Shopped at 3rd st., Sears on Fla. St., Bon Marche, Cortana, etc.

We were relatively safe if we stayed away from Scotlandville after dark.
