It's an upscale suburb of a major US city.
It's not my cup of Tea but they're plenty worse places in the country. I lived in Plano and spent time in the Woodlands. I'll take The Northshore sans Slidell all day over those two demographicallysimilar burbs .

Covington is okay. It was better twenty plus years ago. Traffic sucks, especially with the seemingly endless construction on highway 21. Stay out of the ghetto (pretty much any street with a number 3 in it). Old Covington has been revitalized pretty good. Plenty of nice turn of the century homes that have been restored. CHS sucks donkey testicles but Mandeville High is good. Only a little over an hour from Baton Rouge and just over the causeway from New Orleans.

Covington, mandeville, Madisonville are all nice places to live. However, not if you work on the Southshore.

Ya, there are either some new people here or people that have never been where they are telling others not to go or where the trash lives. Its pretty comical.

It's not a large area, but yes, I would call it a ghetto area. That's why the jail is near there, for convenience. Hell, even Madisonville has a semi-ghetto area behind the elementary school.

It's pretty much the perfect place to raise children. Plenty of jobs in New Orleans, good public schools, lots of good restaurants, decent bar scene for a town its size, scenic views along the lake, great walking/biking trails, multiple breweries, low crime, ect: It's just a really pleasant place to live, but in typical Louisiana fashion, its development is rapidly outpacing its infrastructure.

You know they are building a couple neighborhoods with 400k+ houses in that area.

Love the fact that is considered the ghetto.

Yep. There isn't one area in Covington that I would feel unsafe in.

Dude we used to play ball in that area of Covington as kids. It's not unsafe, although it is certainly run down looking

It's funny because back in the early 1980's we said the same thing. The single biggest thing that I saw that really brought the quality of Northshore life down was when Beau Chene opened. The Tony Campos of the south shore flocked there to get their postage stamp sized piece of piney heaven and went to work turning Mandeville, Covington, and Madisonville into Veterans Boulevard North. Other subdivisions existed before Beau Chene but they didn't encourage the nouveau lifestyle.
