If you have checked it out, do so LINK
There aren't many good video game documentaries out there and Danny Odwyer left gamespot to do his own. He just launched his 2nd series today about Doom. The previous was about Rocket League.
They are great work and these stories are rare in video games. Most studios are too tight lipped or have NDAs stopping them so it's hard to get to goof stories. Danny has done a great job so far and hopefully he can continue this for a while.

loved seeing the old footage of Doom 4. Crazy how dated and early those animations were Seems like Id is on the right track

Think about how hard that must have been to reboot it that far into it. It cost a lot of money and dedication.

It's funny that DOOM ended up being the antithesis of what 4 was trying to be. Still my goty.

DOOM made me feel what gaming is about again. It was a video game that let the environment tell most of the story and let you have fun through gameplay. I didn't need 100 5min cuts scenes like a Naughty Dog game.
Edt: Was hoping Dishonored 2 would be my GOTY but that still goes to DOOM.

I don't know my GOTY but doom is in the running for sure.

Because my vote counts
I do want to finish some games before the bombcast end of year podcasts where they spoil stuff.

DOOM proves it's okay to just be a videogame. It also has really cool lore and a great antagonist.
I'm having trouble getting into Dishonored 2, the enemy AI ruins it for me. I just replayed the original and still love it.

Must agree. The story is less engaging and environment less wtf. Also you meant a lot of sub-characters with complex agendas and ties in Dishonored. This one not so much. What I do like about it is some of the added gameplay elements like "folding time".

It's nice having more non lethal options, like the counter when sword fighting but it doesn't do much good when you're having to fight half a dozen goons at once if you get spotted.
I'm not far into it, but there was a guy leaning against a rail with his back to me - I'm not even close to him and he goes into high alert for no reason and was mobbed immediately. I said frick this and haven't touched it since.

quote:I had to stop listening to last years when I realized I hadn't played most of what they were going to spoil. I meant to return to it but never did. I think I'll have to avoid it this year too. Makes me a little sad because it's been a little personal tradition of mine to listen to the end of year Bombcast episodes while I work the last week of the current year and first week of the new year.

On topic, this Noclip episode was great. I still haven't played the new Doom but it's neat to see glimpses of id and how they've evolved over the years. Watching this makes me wish there was a documentary version of the book "Masters of Doom" with this level of production values.

2 years in a row I had to stop listening when they discussed best story. I think I'm covered this year though.

Part 2 was even better, go watch. Hugo is everything that is right about gaming. All the guys seem awesome. I just went and bought Doom bc these are the guys to support.
Hugo's line about "they're frickin worshipping me, and I'm just sleepin" Reallydoes make you feel awesome.

You just went and bought it again?

While I often love the slow burn of a good game intro like Half-Life's tram / train rides or the opening to TLOU, it is refreshing to see a game that immediately throws you into the action because it knows what kind of game it is.

Red boxed it first time. Actually my buddy did, forgot it at my house, and I beat it before he came back and got it
