Just to add a little trivia: the founder of the North Face (Doug Thomkins) was married to a co-founder of Patagonia (Kristine Wear) until the former's death last year.

She wasn't a co-founder. Kristine worked for Chouinard under Chouinard Equipment and basically ran his business while he was out climbing. She eventually became CEO after it was Patagonia.
They were all a close knit climbing group that pioneered the sport and started clothing and equipment companies. Yvon Chouinard(Patagonia), Tom Frost(Black Diamond which was initially Chouinard Equipment), Royal Robbins(Royal Robbins). There's a great documentary about it all which focuses on their climbing.
