You have 2 options. Say your honored he asked but he really doesn't owe you anything. Tell him you don't want to be the best man because you set them up. Explain to him it should be his dad or brother or best friend or someone.
If he insists that he wants you to do it, then sack up and do it. It will be a little of an inconvenience but it would obviously mean a lot to him.
ETA you talk about your Rolls and how great your returns on your property's are all the time just by the damn plane ticket and stop bitching.

Tell him your anonymous Internet associates want him to register and for him to plead his case on a message board.
Bring him out that we may know him, so to speak.

You should do it because it is the right thing to do. It's not for your wedding it's his. Not about you here.
Whenever i have to travel for weddings, i try and make a vacation out of it. usually tell them im here, will not be attending your next one.

I didn't want to burst his bubble and say it was an accident bc he really believes we somehow arranged it bc he was in town visiting

If your wife is friends with the bride, which you said she is, wouldn't y'all be invited to the wedding anyway??

ask him genuinely if he has any friends/brother that he is closer to and would feel slighted if they were not chosen. if he says yes, then encourage him to choose them and give it your blessing after convincing him it was his idea to choose them.
if he says no, you're the only one he's close to. well, good luck! I have no answer for that.
figure out who he should have asked and tell him your honored but you really don't want to take their honor when their meeting was fate/blind luck. You are just happy they are married.
OR
Just say it's not to late old school style until it makes him uncomfortable.
I was a groomsman for a grad school guy I barely knew. I figured if he was down to asking me he really need me in lol

Aside from introducing him to his soon to be wife which was more bc two people were 35 and single and happened to meet via friends,I just wouldn't have anything to really say in a speech. We're just casual friends, met through mutual friends. We grab dinner when he's in town, but nothing to where I have hilarious stories to share or anything in a wedding speech. It was just so awkward he asked, he said he owed me big time for introducing him to his wife. easy you talk about them meeting
hell make it up that you thought they might be a match and you knew from the moment they meet. will get alot of awws

If he's got a good head on his shoulders, he could tell the true story and have it be an awesome speech.
A story like that has the potential for both laughs and "awwws" if you plan it out well.

I told a friend of mine that I wasn't in the right frame of mind or in a position to fulfill my best man duties at the time. He understood.
Posted on 12/6/16 at 11:25 am to dabigfella
Tell him, bruh since you owe me then dont ask me to be your best man.

I am a terrible person so you probably shouldnt take my advice... but ill offer it anyway.
I turned down a good friend of mines invite to be a groomsman in his wedding which was in Florida because I didnt want to travel all the way there and with me planning my own wedding (which happened the month before his) money was just too tight.
When he original asked me I ask him when the wedding was and said I would check my work schedule. (I work in Oil and Gas in the refinery) I told him we would be in the middle of a shutdown, and I would not want him to depend on me, I would try to make the wedding, but to see if he could find someone else to replace me as a groomsman because I would hate to find out last minute I had to work and things get thrown off.
It worked.

Being in a wedding nowadays sucks b/c no one pays for the groomsmen or bridesmaids expenses anymore.
Ive been in 3 weddings, not including my own, and im going to be in another one next year and never once has it crossed my mind that it sucks to be asked because I have to pay for shite. Weddings are Alot of fun of you're in the wedding party. Enjoy the ride.
You have to be a pretty miserable person to not enjoy a wedding

What's the relationship between your wife and his fiancée? That could play strongly into the consequences of your decision. Make it easy. Just ask your wife and keep the peace

Only one thing to do....Fake your death.
Probably shouldn't post her for awhile just to be safe.
Good luck!
