Is there a outfitter site you can look up what you are looking to hunt, etc?
I'm sure there are, but I was living up there and did it all myself. elk hunted in the routt national forest near steamboat springs and paid a trespass fee to hunt antelope on a cattle ranch south of Chayenne.

Alaska would be fun. Did you kill it with a gun or bow?
Alaska is awesome, the trip itself was the best adventure ever, mountains, scenery, bush flights, inflatable boats, rapids, wildlife, bears, fishing, etc,the trophy was all bonus
Killed it with a .338 win mag, I am not a bow hunter, but the outfitter had a guy headed in the day we were leaving and he killed a nice one with his bow

Tactical scope?
Where did you get it? I was looking at a leupold, bushnell or zeiss

I love the vortex, everybody has their favorites, but do yourself a favor and go somewhere that you can look through a wides selection of brands, when you figure out which one you like look them up on optics planet or midway for best prices

I may try and over the counter elk bow new mexico deal next year or the next.
Then another big trip

It was pricey, sticker price was a little over20K, but with a bottle of crown and some slick negotiation skills my buddy got the price down to about 15 each, of course once you add in air fare, air charter, license, tags, tips, hotels, necessary equipment, sat phone rentals, taxidermy fees, shipping and crating of trophies, etc, etc it was a lot and I have intentionally never added up the full cost, some things are better not known

I went elk hunting this year in Idaho. Went with some friends that live there. Only saw a spike and couldn't get a shot off but it's awesome. I highly recommend it. I'm hooked. Going back next year in Colorado. Just OTC tags.

For Non residents New Mexico is all draw, and they don't have preference points. So its all by odds. Unless you want to do an outfitter and New Mexico last I checked was on the higher end as far as states go because they have some of the biggest bulls there on average. Now you can go with an outfitter and they can help with tags but that costs you too.
OP, what are you looking to spend? If you want a legit 7x7 or I'm sorry but 8x8 you are talking $20,000+.
The "trophy bull" states are Utah and New Mexico and will cost you more. You may want to check out Montana and Idaho as those are probably "lesser known" states for Elk then wyoming and Colorado so a lot of times you can get better rates. Idaho has tons of Over the counter tags for rifle, not sure about Montana. As said Wyoming is all draw and its not easy to draw the first year but you can buy a preference point for like $500 that helps a ton in most areas. A preference point not trying to draw for that same year is $50.

Why?
Wyoming's non resident elk tags are just hard to get, but the odds will vary from unit to unit. Some better than others. Obviously this applies to first year applicant for a public land elk.
