this grand strategy to revolutionize CFB by going cheap on the HC to blow up the coordinator market is going to be glorious to watch unfold
It could work. Turnover may be high but keep buying the best

I think it was more of a case of wouldn't instead of couldn't.

Somehow I missed putting in the 4. I meant he isn't worth 4 million

No, he's worth $5 million because that's what Texas paid him.
Herman may not work out. Maybe he's not that good: but that's the price you have to pay to be a top tier program.

from what I understand, we offered Herman a contract in the 5 million range and he agreed to it
and then he insisted on talking to Texas anyway so Alleva pulled the offer.

If it is true that Jimbo wanted ten years guaranteed then I'm proud of Alleva for telling Jimbo and Sexton to go eat a big pile of dung. That is frickin insane greed man. I'm also glad Alleva told Herman that he wasn't going to hold LSU hostage as a bargaining chip against Texas. I really don't understand all this "woe is us" rhetoric coming from LSU fans. Y'all will always be a contender and a force to be reckoned with. And if in a few years y'all decide to part ways with Coach O, he will leave yall stocked with elite talent.

I understand that maybe they were asking for too much....but the fact remains that we only had 2 choices outside of O.
We KNEW Texas would counter with Herman and we KNEW Jimbo was going to ask for a shite-ton. Why not have other options? Fedora, Petrino, Freeze, Bulemia, Mullens.....

Orgeron was always the top choice and really the only choice. Herman and Fisher were only window dressing to make us think the administration was doing its due diligence. There was no serious coaching search.
TD helped fuel the illusion of a serious search with talks going on but it was all literally a smoke screen. There was no inside information being leaked, etc. Probably the TD admins themselves either playing along or simply generating clicks.
Our administration was never going to spend the money needed to secure a top flight coach. Ed Orgeron might become a legend at LSU and then again, we might be searching for a new HC in 2019.

I think there is a serious question about whether Herman deserves $5 mil. What, exactly, has he done to warrant that kind of salary?

That's circular logic, bro. Texas just overpaid.

No, it's just the free market.
And yes, maybe Texas overpaid. But that's not the point. If you want a highly desired coach, you have to be prepared to take that risk. We are not.....therefore we can't afford it.

Yup. That's pretty much my point.

The free market sets a price, not worth. For example, I could buy a brand new iphone and overpay for it. The market sets the price, but the price is more than the phone is worth.

This fundamentally contradicts your point about the free market, but I have to say I agree with you. They overpaid.

We were prepared to hire him, but not to pay him what he was asking because he hasn't actually accomplished anything as a head coach.

It's not that we couldn't afford it. Alleva just didn't want to get into a bidding war for an unproven coach. He also didn't want to give stadium rights and naming rights to our next bengal tiger for Jimbo Fisher (thank God)
This was a proactive move. LSU can now monitor the young coaches with potential to see who can build the best resume's over the next 2-4 years IF O fails without any financial repercussions. Not to mention we'll have a stocked roster full of talent.

Because there was only 1 candidate.

He's 6-0 against top 25 teams over the last 2 years. How did LSU do against Top 25 teams ? His record was 22-4. He was also O coordinator at Ohio State and won a title with a 3rd string qb.
How much should he be paid? Kirby Smart got $4 million to go to Georgia.

So why were our only 2 choices (outside the backup plan) beyond our budget?
LSU should not have a budget during the hiring process.
Schools that aren't elite have a budget.

And also lost to UConn, Navy, SMU, and Memphis. His teams play to the level of the opponent -- not the sign of a great coach, IMO.

I think Lane Kiffin has clearly demonstrated the difference between being OC and HC.

Just to put it in perspective, Texas was paying Charlie Strong $5.2 mil. That means they habitually overpay. Higher price does not equal higher worth, my friend.

I wouldn't have agreed with that if lsu went that high. Not sure if he is ready to deal with the politics of UT but good luck to him.

The better question is why LSU can't pay O like 200k/year if this is truly his dream job.
Realistically O should be making 2-2.5 mill but you can have him making less than the coordinators
