Why Charlie Strong could not get it done at Texas?

Just wanting to get some input for those who might follow Texas (which I don't). We're taking about one of the premier football schools in the nation with more resources financially and talent pool anywhere. And, the conference is not really that strong except for a couple of schools. Was it his coaching style? Lack of recruiting? Bad assistants?

IDK but I think it sucks the way Texas is treating him. I guess it just comes with the territory in the business but I wouldn't want it.

A prime example is Charlie got fired and no one bothered to tell him or the AD.
UT is a political mess.

I don't follow closely but seems like Muschamp you have to fix a mess

Recruiting - Strongs last two classes were top 10 i believe
He has Texas going in the right direction. Started a Fr QB and his RB leads the nation in rushing. Last i heard
His defense has work to be done
The next HC is walking into a good situation

He took over a program that was a complete disaster.
He has some good recruiting classes but I think he also flip flopped on his offensive style of play he never really seemed comfortable.
1 of his biggest flaws is he didn't do near the hand shaking and baby kissing that Mack Brown did. He lost a lot of support by not going to social engagements. He would probably have at least another year if he would have been more in the public eye.

His first year he cleaned the program up. Dismissed troublemakers from the program who were contributors on the team. Even though he did the right thing, most people want change by the 2-3 yr

i think its a combination of things:
1. i think he never had complete support from the admin/power brokers, the ones that didn't support his hiring never got in line once the hire was made
2. The team was in bad shape, especially on the LOS towards the end of mack's tenure, plus there was a culture lacking discipline within the team that needed to be cleaned up. Charlie cleaned it up as he saw fit, got rid of some older players that wouldn't get on board and went young.
3. The QB situation that he walked into was atrocious. almost LSU bad.
4. bad timing- he came into the league when Baylor and TCU were on historic upswings. this plus lack of connection within the TXHS ranks made recruiting a tougher prospect
all that said i think texas is a 8-10 win team next year with or without strong

Pretty big reason right there.

And that's a shame. Really. How many years do other big name schools give coaches?? More than 3??

The list is long...
First, Texas hasn't recruited premier in a while. They haven't had a o lineman drafted since 2008. They get nice skill players but the lines never seem to work out for them. This has been the biggest weakness. Then they lost the recruiting advantage in Texas. They haven't been producing much nfl talent.
Charlie kicked off the bad character guys and took it a step further and kicked off the pot smokers also. This left his roster in real bad shape. They are very young with no real upper-class leadership.
Charlie has also had QB issues. It's never good to have to play a true freshman. Or to try to convert a TE into a QB. (Swopes)
His offensive coordinator sucked the first two years then he fixed it with a new hire, but this year the defense went to shite. The main reason Charlie had a good offense at Louisville was because of a talent like Bridgewater. There is nobody close to Bridgewater anywhere close to the ut campus.
Defense is supposed to be his specialty. They couldn't even tackle properly this year. Defense really showed a lack of attention to detail and understanding of fundamentals. The secondary was having trouble even lining up properly this year. Charlie had no answer on why the defense looked so bad when it was his specialty. His only answer was to demote the d coordinator.
Charlie has also not fit the culture. He hasn't glad handed the big donors enough to get another year. He hasn't been involved in social functions. He hasn't given access like the big cigar guys wants.
There has been little momentum in his favor since he got to town. He hasn't generated any excitement to speak of. The stadium has been embarrassing empty during his tenure. (70k in a 100k stadium is bad)
Lastly, all his support is gone. He was Steve Patterson's guy. Steve got fired and is vilified around town for the way he ran the program. When Steve got canned there went all Charlies support.
If he had glad handed more he would probably get one more year.
As it is Texas fans think Herman is a golden boy. They would give up the bank to get him and don't want to miss him. They are literally scared Herman might go to Baylor or somewhere else rather than ut. The fear of them losing Herman has sealed Charlies fate.

So, in your opinion, Strong could possibly land somewhere that's a better fit and be successful? The only reason I ask is that Strong's name did come up as a possibility for LSU albeit a highly unlikely one.
Thanks for the info. Good stuff.

Yes Strong, can be a good coach with the right fit. Not at LSU however. I don't see what he could bring LSU, because I think we need a qb developer. Strong is strictly a defensive guy.
Strong, has been known as one of the best state of Florida recruiters ever, especially in South Florida. He has worked South Florida since at least 1999. He was locking down all that defensive talent Florida had under Urban. He even got Florida recruits to commit to Texas.
Strong's next job should be a mid major that recruits Florida. The perfect job for him would be Miami or FSU if they came open. However, he is going to have to go back mid major before he gets a shot at Miami or FSU. I can see him at North Carolina if Fedora leaves.

With the success he had as a def coord in SEC and the success he had at Louisville, I'm shocked he has not been more successful at Texas.
Too many recruiting misses?

Bad assistants?
He hired his buddy to be the DC, and the defense has been awful. And his buddy is still around, and the defense is even worse.
Sounds like a story I have heard before.

not enough time to put out the dumpster fire and rebuild. Team is young and he has recruited well. Next coach will benefit...like O at Ole Miss needed more time and Houston Nutt benefited, Muschamp at FL, Croom at State, and so on.
Do not be the guy that has to put out fires, follow him if you are a coach.

Because texas A&M is now in the SEC taking all the texas recruits

he's not capable of all the demands of running a big program. Most coaches aren't. Some mature into it but I tend to think it's more peter principle at work here. I doubt he'll ever have success at a high profile program.
He can go to some mid-level P5 program and probably be fine but big programs have big demands from boosters, media, and high profile players. It's a tough fricking job and the balancing act to keep everyone happy is absurd. Many coaches just want to coach. I think Strong falls into this category.

What coach at LSU would survive more than 3 years with his record???
