the kid knew it was a whooping crane and went after them. Can't claim ignorance. Should be punished pretty stiffly to make an example. I think the penalty is pretty fair.
One of the kids hat shot one in Louisiana had to do community service and from what I hear he is now gone full circle and is quite the conservationist now

There a link to this somewhere? Would love to read the backstory. The only thing I've read is that he thought they were sandhill cranes (still would've been illegal where he was hunting) but his lawyer told him to say he thought they were snow geese since those were legal at the time.

Your arse is in big trouble pal.
Kill a baby?

well now wait a minute. Are you talking about abortion-which, thought abhorrent, is legal- or actual murder? Because I don't know any state in the country where killing a kid is legal.
And we harvest bears, mountain lions, wolves, etc under legal conditions. Suggesting that this is an overly harsh or unjust punishment simply because the legal system fails to properly punish other crimes is silly.
If anything, I think they got it right on this crime and fail to do so on many other infractions. I'm all for finding fault when people slide on DUIs, felonies and crimes of a more egregious nature. But I won't find fault with the decision here just cause judges/juries get it wrong the rest of the time.

It's been a decade or more but a buddy of mine shot a black bear on a WMA during a feral hog hunt. No excuses, was near nightfall and there was no mention of bears in the handbook for the unit. He thought it was a hog and shot it. He radioed me afterward and we went straight to the wardens and he came clean.
He was arrested and charged with a felony count. Moreover, it was a Federal offense as the bears were Federally protected. In the end, they took his hunting privileges away for a few years plus the gun and his ATV which they confiscated at the time of his arrest. They also fined him upwards of $10,000 and assessed him with 100+ hours of community service.
The lesson learned? Don't ever come clean, bury that bitch in a hole somewhere and take your chances. There is no reward in being honest and owning the mistake.
Given what my buddy went through I'd say this young fella in Texas got off easy.

There's a link in the first few posts to a news article. Apparently he had gone hunting with some guys shortly before shooting the cranes and one of the guys he hunted with explained to him why he shouldn't shoot cranes in the area because of the WCs that were there. According to the story he told the guy that he would shoot them anyway.

Moral of the story should be to always identify your target before pulling the trigger
One of the first things you learn in hunters safety. That and treat every firearm as if it's loaded

Man, that's bullshite if he came clean immediately and self-reported. I can understand a stiff fine, but the other shite is just piling on to someone who clearly didn't have any intention of breaking the law.

I don't disagree with you and he learned a valuable lesson. In the end it was an honest mistake that he self reported. They shouldn't have thrown the book at him. He had no previous criminal history and now has a felony on his record. Given the situation it seems awfully harsh to me.

Please do STFU. These are jot even remotely the same, and I'm sick and tired of this comparison made everytime a story like this comes up.
So what, just because abortion is legal, there should be no punishment for killing a protected species?
How would you feel if this kid was shooting deer or ducks or any other game out of season?
GTFO with that political BS.

If he wasn't expecting bears in the area, I could see making a mistake. Doesn't mean he should get away clean, because he is responsible for what he shoots, but a black bear and a hog can look very similar, even if you get a good look at it. Compare it to this. If a mule deer walked out at 100yds in LA, you'd almost certainly think it was a white tail, because you wouldn't be expecting a mule deer here. People should be expecting bears now in LA, but in years past they were almost nonexistant, so he probably didn't give it a second thought when a thick, black haired, four legged animal walked out.

Does seem harsh, but, if he shot not knowing full well what he waa shooting at, I see why they would have thrown the book at him.
Not saying I agree with them throwing the book at him, but I can see why he got it thrown at him.

This. That's a miscarriage of justice IMO.

These birds are critically endangered and may soon go extinct. I know people who have put a lot of time and effort into keeping them on the planet.
Being nice to a fricking poacher who killed two of them really shouldn't be a priority. Make an example of him. If a person can't follow the laws, or be bothered to learn them, he doesn't deserve to hunt. Those people give the rest of us a bad name.

I agree with everything but the taking of his guns. Not necessary imo

I'm not seeing anything about self-reporting.

I agree I can see how mistakes can be made with bears in areas with pigs. Known people who have come close to shooting a bear mistaking it for a pig.
