How involved is SAF with Manchester United

Like is he involved in in the day to day goings on with the club? His title is director and club ambassador but that could mean anything really. And he does work with UEFA as some kind of coaching ambassador. Again, who knows how much work is really involved for either of those positions. He teaches a class at Harvard too I think I read. Anyway..
The reason I ask is because I would think it has to be killing him watching United play the type of football they have been. Especially this season, considering all the money spent and big name signings being managed so poorly by his friend (or so I've read) Jose. If he were to be involved in some kind of coaching capacity, surely he could help to contribute some kind of offensive ideas to go along with Jose's defensive based philosophy.
I'm not even a United fan, but as a soccer fan I was just really excited to watch this team play and it's been such a bummer the way they've started the season.

There is no way he is anything other than a figurehead. And it's not as simple as offering offensive ideas. SAF's teams were drilled to play certain ways. They had a structure and players had to respond within that structure to different situations.
Man U doesn't have that same structure anymore. Moyes sort of tried to build on it, but he really didn't. LvG established a structure, but his attacking play was cautious and timid. Mourinho could have built on that defensive structure, but he's posed with a particular problem of trying to fit a lot of superstars into a team with no framework to guide him.

You caught some shite in the other thread for suggesting this but I completely agree with you. They can't seem to find the right combination of midfielders and forwards to play the type of football Jose likes to play. The defense has been crap too, but that side of the game is easier to remedy when good players get more minutes together as a unit. Defensive talent won't be the reason they fail this season IMO.

United need a director a football first and foremost.

Rooney may need a new gig in the next couple of weeks.

Well, I know that he goes to a lot of games and sits in the stands with thousands of people. Then, every time something bad happens for United, the cameras zoom in on him and make it seem that he's lording over whatever new manager we have in disapproval.
Other than that, I think he's a team ambassador who's obviously not involved in any of the day-to-day operations of the club.
