Only 30k people were there. Of course there would be some no shows b/c of the match getting moved back but only 45k tickets were sold for the match.
Build brand new third tier, don't fill brand new third tier.

Pep Guardiola has urged Manchester City fans to throw their full weight behind their Champions League challenge after they opened their 2016/17 challenge with a win.
quote:
Yet their supporters have seemed lukewarm towards the competition, with attendances often disappointing, but Guardiola feels it is time to move on.
Guardiola, a two-time Champions League winner while in charge of Barcelona, said: "I was not here for what happened but they must forget what happened in the past. We are here to create [history] for the people to talk about our club.
quote:
"Today the stadium was not completely full so the only thing we can do is play good. We have to be so proud to play in this competition.
"The people are listening to me so I am sure they are going to do that. I am going to work until the last moment to convince the people to come here to join us to see the Champions League games
quote:
"Our fans have to know we need them in the Champions League. We cannot make something good in the Champions League in the coming years without them.
"Our players deserve the stadium completely full and hopefully against Barcelona and Celtic it is going to happen."

Pay me £15 million a year and I'll gladly whine about the Emptyhad.

It is blue. Just look at the empty seats.

how many home games are there in a season between all competitions?

Why does that even matter?
Other clubs fans can show up with 3 or 4 competitions.

Well as I'm sure you know, City's fanbase isn't a large one.. It's still very localized and unlike United or Arseanal or other huge clubs, a family from another European country likely isn't going to take a trip over the weekend to go to the Etihad.
The stadium was added onto in anticipation of the direction the club is going in, which is obviously to become a worldwide brand, which is happening, but it won't happen over night.
We'll sell out a number of matches, but for anyone to expect the club attendance, and I'm speaking of Pep, to be like the Allianz or Camp Nou is ridiculous. The club is nowhere near as large world wide as those mentioned.
It also doesn't help at all that those quotes were taken somewhat out of context after watching the full post match interview.

You do realize a vast majority of United and Arsenal match going fans are local. The whole tourist thing isn't as big as people make it out to be.

Makes no sense to build when there is not the demand. It was used as a FFP loop hole for "potential revenue". City owners are not dumb

Yes I do, but I know friends of mine (so I'm assuming others may know people who have done this, but please someone correct me if I'm wrong and no one knows anyone who has made a trip like this) who have made trips from the states just to go to a match at Old Trafford or The Emirates.
You know good and well that United and other large clubs are much more followed by people who don't live there than City are.
Hell, I don't even know any other City fans in real life. They're all United fans for the most part.

City has always had a loyal but small base. The stadium is just to big for the club. Their issue is they are playing catch up big time trying to get fans in a country where people already have generations of following a team. They get tourist and fans from London now like everyone else but the base will never be big enough. Manchester is and will always be red.

Plastics gonna plastic. I chuckled when Nolito was interviewed on his initial tour of the stadium and he asked if it would always be full.

Do you support a foreign club? If so, and correct me if I'm wrong because I certainly may be, but I'm assuming you don't have any ties with the area based off of your profile information.

A plastic fan is one whose allegiance to a team is not determined by geography or family ties.
This term is ridiculously overused on this board, especially when the majority of posters are and have always lived here in the States.
