The first one was a great film.

The 90 movie was great. So great that parents groups had them tone down the violence in the second one. IIRC, the comics were much more like the first movie than any of the sequels.
Yeah the original comics were kinda dark. They dumbed it down for kids later. I think the first movie was a good mix of dark realism and humor.

just like Batman, Superman, X-Men, etc
But those are much smarter and better franchises. Ninja Turtles is just schlock. Entertaining schlock, but schlock nonetheless. You're never going to get a Dark Phoenix Saga, The Dark Knight Returns, or All Star Superman level of story from them. The material just isn't strong enough to support something like that.

Go back to the early Batman and Superman comics. Those were pretty cheesy and dumb. The whole concept of a nearly invincible alien, who just happens to look exactly like a human, protecting the Earth from other aliens and monsters while his main nemesis is an evil billionaire businessman is kind of dumb. Or how about a billionaire businessman who trained himself to be an elite fighter and genius detective and drives a jet engine powered car/tank around town while the police just stand back and let him handle the tough criminals. The idea of magic goo turning turtles and a rat into humanoid creatures that fight crime is no less dumb.

I would love a non cheese, non cgi, badass and gritty version of TMNT.
Looking back as an adult, the 1990 movie was fairly dark and "gritty." Sure, it was cheesy, but that's what TMNT was all about though. But it was terribly dark for a "kids" movie IMO.
And it was pretty violent and "badass" as well, especially for the time (and again, for a kids movie).
Just look at the toned down shite throughout the second one as evidence of how cool the first one was. They used almost no weapons at all, and it was overly "silly" which was kinda the point. The second movie was basically like "Let's tone this shite down and just have fun with everything." And it's really entertaining too, just in a different way than the original one was.

I have to disagree. Superman is a strong man from another planet. There have been badass billionaires before. Yes they started off corny as hell, but there was more to work with than a bunch of teenage turtles who eat pizza and talk in 80s skateboard slang.
There's a reason why there aren't literal animals in the Justice League or the Avengers. If a frog happened to go into a nuclear reactor, became Frogman, and then joined with one of these groups, then we would all think they jumped the shark.

The second one always made me want to get pizza. The opening scene with all that awesome looking NY style pizza....
Loved both.

Yeah, instead it's just people that like to play dress up as animals

I do remember thinking the animated one from like 2007 was pretty good. Way better than I expected it to be.

A gritty, non-cheese movie of turtles who are exposed to toxic waste (along with a rat), grow to super size and intelligence, and are trained by the rat in martial arts?
So a live action movie that looks like it was created during Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing?

They are kids. How did you act when you were 14?
Thats a problem with them. Raphael and Leonardo act like they are 40.
