Without spending a ton of money
Basically don't want a $400/500 Dyson. Anything worth a crap in the $100/200 range?

We just got the Hoover Hushtone. Seems to work really well.

That's going to cost substantially more money than a Dyson.

I laughed when my MIL bought a Shark. I don't laugh now, as it is very good and cheap ($150.00).

Vacuums, one of those few things that go up in cost the more they suck.

Oreck and it's not even close. Have had mine for over 10 years, and it is a beast.

Check groupon for deals on a Dyson. $175 for their ball design vacuum, refurbished.

They're worth it - I got one with no filters and no bags. Hell, that's worth almost $200 to me right there.

Maybe Oreck.

dunno.... got a rainbow.... hell of a vacuum, but you gotta empty that water thing after you are done, and it smells like shite...
it will get shite clean, but cleaning up the thing is a hassle, and they aren't cheap... i think we paid about $2k for it... crazy, i know....

Not in your range, but I suggest sucking it up (pun intended), and spending a bit more now for a 30 year vacuum. They work better and last a hell of a lot longer. The Dyson is really a bunch of plastic, and if you use it every other day (dogs), they just don't hold up well after a few years.
I went through 3 Dysons before looking into vacuums by Lux by Aerus and ones by Miele. Yes they are expensive, but they are built with steel parts and can be serviced for years.
I eventually bought a canister style vac by Lux/Aerus, but Lux, as well as Miele, both make uprights in the $900 range. The Lux canister vacs are $1200/$1600/$2000 for the 3 models they offer, and I believe the uprights are a bit less expensive. The canister vac prices include all the numerous carpet, powered beater-bar, brush, and hose attachments.
When you try one out, the quality and heft is immediately felt in the feel and handling of the vac, and when you first use one in your home, you will be amazed at the the dust/dirt that it picks up which the Dyson just couldn't get.

Because of the price? I got a refurbished Dyson from eBay about 6-7 years ago and it still works like new
You could definitely get a good one for around $150

Just bought a Shark Pro ($199). Had a Dyson ($500). This thing beats the Dyson all to hell and back. Look up vacuums and you'll see it gets very high ratings.
