frick it, I'm a nerd for this shite.
Feel free to discuss your favorite fantasy novels and collections.
I grew up reading the Harry Potter books. I have read the Song of Ice and Fire novels, as well as the World of Ice and Fire.
I recently started the Kingkiller Chronicles when I was looking for fantasy novels similar to ASOIAF. Truth be told the Kingkiller Chronicles is really nothing like Game of Thrones. This may not be a good description to some, but to me the Kingkiller Chronicles is like Harry Potter meets the Witcher. I just finished the first book "The Name of the Wind," and it was really good. I'm starting the second novel tomorrow. I also purchased a lot of the Malazan Book of the Fallen series and plan to start that soon. Additionally, I got the Brandon Sanderson Stormlight Archive novels and will start those. Got plenty to get through.
Feel free to post suggestions, favorites, questions, etc.

Grew up on Piers Anthony and Dragonlance and Tolkien. Such was my life.
Given Sanderson's output, I have to just read him now. And Kingkiller along with that.

I like The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher personally

I highly recommend the original Shannara series. Haven't read them in a long time, but great series. Never got into the spin-off series that he did after.

Don't know how I forgot Lord of the Rings, that was probably the first fantasy series I read. It was the Hobbit I read first actually.

If you can find a copy of it, I highly recommend "Villains by Necessity" by Eve Forward.
The only issue is that it is out of print. I bought a used copy online.
Its a great book. A good reverse take on the hero story where the villains have to save reality from the heroes.

With the banishment of Evil from the realms, the final victory of Good is assured-unless a few stalwart antiheroes can save the world from a serious and potentially fatal imbalance. First novelist Forward explores the complications that arise from a surfeit of "goodness" in the world. The result is a skewed version of the epic fantasy that features an assassin, a thief, an evil sorceress, a dark knight, and an implacable druid as the villains-turned-heroes who must restore the delicate balance of opposing forces before their world disappears in a blinding flash of Goodness and Light
The only issue is that it is out of print. I bought a used copy online.

Eye of the World is Book 1 in the Wheel of Time series. I've had my eye on this series for a while.

I really like the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. Been reading them as my filler until Rothfuss gets around to dropping book 3 of the Kingkiller Chronicles.
The Demon Cycle by Peter Brett is cool too. The main character is a badass.
I just restarted The Templar Series by Paul Christopher if youre in the mood for something more Dan Brown like.

I literally read every single Brian Jacques book in elementary and middle school. Then I read Piers Anthony and Robert Jordan. Damn, that was years ago.
I read the first Kingkiller and I enjoyed it.

I've recently gotten into Fahferd and the Gray Mouser stories by Freitz Leiber. About halfway through the first book. So far I really like them.
My favorites by far are Robert E Howard's stories. His descriptions are fantastic and you feel like you are there fighting beside Conan or any of his other leads.
Others I've enjoyed and recommend are, Song of Fire and Ice, Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia.
I was also surprised that Harry Potter was such a good read.

If you consider yourself a fantasy nerd, i think it is imperative that robert jordan's wheel of time series is #1 on the list. He picked up the baton for fantasy in the 90s and ran away with it.

Has no one else read Villains by Necessity?

Correct. My mistake.
You should read it. It is much like LOTR but just a much longer story. Most of the paperbacks are 800-1000 pages and I think there are 13-14 books in all.

I loved - and still do - the Conan series...

Speaking of Robert Jordan, his Conan books are awesome, too.
