"(T)he dioceses had been able to identify 6,700 unique accusations against 4,392 clergy over that period in the USA, which is about 4% of all 109,694 ordained clergy i.e. priests or deacons or members of religious orders, active in the USA during the time covered by the study.[2]"
Oh, so the dioceses did a self examination and that was the numbers they found huh? Im sure those numbers are very accurate.
Was Boston just an anomaly then? 1/10 is a conservative estimate.
You aren't factoring in the thousands of these cases that are swept under the rug, settled in private and kept out of public court.

If we had perfect knowledge, I'd say anywhere from 1 in 11 to about 1 in 8 (at least in the U.S.) - based on Boston and making extrapolations, knowing the pattern did vary from some diocese have a low tolerance and others having a low tolerance - tolerance tended to be directly proportional to the size of the diocese.
And 1 in 8 would be horrific.

Probably the same reason teachers bang their students.
There's a difference between a female teacher banging a 16-17 year old kid out of pure lust and a priest preying on 7 year old and using the innocence of the child, the child's trust in him as a holy man, and then the church to cover it all up and go on "sick leave". It's fricking disgusting.

Because the leaders of the Catholic Church are greedy, they want all the priests' estates after death.

I can't wrap my head around the correlation between Catholicism and pedophelia.
It's been going on for a very very long time, but I can't either.

Should I switch to Healing Place now?

But the statistics don't back up the claim that a priest has a higher chance of being a pedophile. It's actually the same percentage as married men.
That said, the number should be zero for priests because of what they stand for. They aren't supposed to be your average man.
I don't care what they are supposed to stand for, clearly that doesn't matter. I care that this continues to happen and people willingly allow these particular men to be alone with their children.
This is the fault of the man, the church and the parents. The man who does it and the other two for allowing it to continue.

Religious people are blinded by this and choose to live in a denial. We've discussed this in our office this afternoon because a few people are from the area and actually know this priest. They cannot fathom that if they drive a 10 mile radius around their home in any direction and pass approx. 10 churches along the way, kids were very likely raped in at least one of them.

I may be way off but I don't think most priests have large estates? Seems like most would have vocational debt and not much retirement/IRA value.

The John Jay Report is the best source for the raw data. It didn't pull any punches, even though it was funded by the dioceses. Even critics of the dioceses acknowledge this much. There is no report that looked at the issue on a nationwide basis that supports the 1 in 10 number.
I will say that Boston was likely to be an outlier, with the acknowledgement that other dioceses were just as bad. That comes down to leadership decisions, which were often made with a misguided eye to the concept of forgiveness and the numerical demands of the priest shortage of the time. And, there were bishops who were in on it as well.
Cheers.

There are plenty of stories of Catholic opulence to go around. Francis does seem to be trying to break it down, but Vatican City ain't exactly Rio.
