The Chicago Bears have claimed quarterback Connor Shaw via waivers.
It was just a simple Friday transaction — except that the Saints put in a claim on Shaw, too, and apparently thought they had added him. Per Peter Schrager of FOX Sports, the Saints jumped the gun on thinking they’d claimed Shaw and let that info leak.
The Bears, who were a spot ahead of the Saints in the waiver order, got Shaw. In what Schrager called “a clerical error,” the Saints had sent an email about claiming Shaw to the entire league instead of just the NFL personnel department.
As proof that someone told something prematurely, ESPN’s Field Yates reported that the Saints had waived tight end Jack Tabb to make room on the roster for Shaw. He later clarified that the Bears actually claimed Shaw.
Well, now Tabb knows he’s the 90th man on the Saints’ offseason roster.
Shaw was waived by the Browns on Thursday. The Browns went through the spring with five quarterbacks, and the new administration chose to move on from the former undrafted free agent brought in by the previous regime.
Shaw played in one game during his time with the Browns, the 2014 season finale. He performed well given the circumstances; he’d spent the first 16 weeks of his rookie season on the practice squad as the Brian Hoyer–Johnny Manziel saga drug on. Now Shaw is reunited with Hoyer in the Bears’ quarterbacks room.
A preseason thumb injury forced Shaw to spend all of last season on injured-reserve.

Predictably, the New Orleans Saints scaled back their practice time during the team's final minicamp session Thursday afternoon. It's essentially getaway day for the team with the final practice before training camp begins in late July.
My observations may not be too plentiful as a result, but here are some tidbits from the abbreviated workout:
- The Saints offense rebounded from Wednesday to perform better than the defense overall.
The three levels of offense each scored a touchdown during their final team drives of the early offseason to end minicamp on a high note.
quote:
Drew Brees hit Willie Snead in the end zone for a score for the first-teamers. Josh Hill ran a sharp, deceptive route and Luke McCown hit Hill for the touchdown.
Even Garrett Grayson and Kyle Prater got into the action on the final play of minicamp. Prater came down with a juggling catch on a back-shoulder throw in the corner of the end zone for the score.
I know there's no major contact in the running game, but I would also credit Mark Ingram with a TD run during team drills as well.
- I'd have to say both sides were pretty even during minicamp, which is probably more of plus for the defense than anything else.
- As for Grayson's development to this point, I still think he has a long way to go to truly even consider him to be the backup. He practiced well at times during Organized Team Activities, but he just didn't seem confident in minicamp in making throws or even breaking the huddle.
quote:
Prater's TD catch was more about Prater making a great catch on a ball not completely on target.

That's pretty terrible if true.

Hated the pick since it was announced. Still hoping Sean makes me look stupid. Still early. Hope he has a break through.

I wouldn't say that around here. You will get crucified. There are a few around these parts who will defend Grayson to the ends of the earth. Its been obvious that he would be a bust. Think Sean Canfield

Today Bobby said he has a ways to go to get to where Ryan Griffin was.

And every post you've made has been negative crap, unless I'm confusing you with someone else

A 3rd round pick, particularly at QB can't really bust though.

Only 17% of QBs selected in the 3rd round have become starters. Let alone good ones. Russell Wilson is absolutely an exception. And later rounds, Tom Brady is probably literally like winning the lotto.
Garrett Grayson fizzling out isn't him being a bust or or a wasted pick and some indictment of Payton. It's the most likely outcome.

It's definitely a wasted pick. 3rd rd pick that never takes a meaningful snap, how could it not be?

Sounds like drafting a QB in the 3rd round when you need starters is pretty dumb then

If he doesn't play, that isn't a wasted pick? What?

The knock I read on Grayson when he came out was that he was not very smart and that led to hesitation in decisions. If true, that just does not fit Payton's offense and I questioned why he took him after reading that.

Seeing a lot on twitter about his footwork being his biggest problem, going to work on it really hard in between now and training camp.

Damn. New a lil bit about him when was drafted, was looking forward to him progressing. Still time though
