There might have been more corruption/exploitation back in the day, but there has definitely been a shift where people went from overall trust of LE to fear/suspicion. It probably has to do with the militarized nature some departments mimic coupled with the flood of negative stories we're exposed to.

I'm a good example: I don't feel "safer" when cops are around - yet they have never personally given me a reason to fear them. So it's an irrational fear/distrust probably due to constantly being bombarded by the flow of negative information.

social media in a nutshell.

I know and have met some really genuine police officers who are very respected people. These are the cops that I have simpathy for. Because social media has made their lives harder nowadays with a lot of young kids being taught to have caution with cops. When I was a kid, police officers were taught that they were like the disciples of Jesus and that they were all Saints and that we should have total trust in them. Bottom line, there's good and bad cops. And that's about all I got
