That scene on TV is going to be brutal. He's gonna be cutting folk in half.

I still can't believe D&D had Selmy die at the hands of some rich assholes while protecting fricking Grey Worm.

Not to mention that most if not all of those idiots were not soldiers. So they pretty much let him fall to some untrained, inexperienced, and ill-equipped thugs in an ally way. Big F U to a legendary knight like him.

Arthur Dayne. He could kill the five of you with his left hand while taking a piss with his right.

It doesn't matter how much more skilled you are, you can only take on so many people at once. He killed like ten of them before getting touched.
It's like the old "how many 7 year olds could you fight at once" question. Now put knives in their hands, and eventually one is gonna stab you.

He hasn't even been shown yet and I already know people are going to be mad at D&D for him going down too easily.
To be fair, we don't know how the fight went down - I have a general idea of what makes sense - Ned and perhaps 1 other (it was 7 to 3, maybe Ned and Reed) face off against the bull. 2 Northmen dispatch Whent, and Dayne just wades through the northmen until all that are left are Ned and Reed, perhaps finishing off the bull in time to take up a defense against Dayne.
Whether or not there was a "deal" made or if Ned and Reed even fought Dayne is for another thread.

ayne does get killed by Ned. Though I think HR distracted him
The text strongly suggests that Ned and HR killed Dayne but it doesn't state it outright. He could have fallen on his sword after Reed convinced him that his charge would be safest at Winterfell, and there's a slim, slim chance that he's still alive. With Martin deliberate ambiguity should set off your Spidey sense.

Or at least that he survived the incident. I'm intrigued by AD=QH theory, for example. But, that's more appropriate for the crackpot thread.

I'm going with Arthur Dayne.
When asked who would win in a duel, George R.R. Martin said that if Arthur Dayne and Barristan Selmy fought with any swords it would be a very even fight - but if Dayne was armed with his sword Dawn, he would narrowly have the advantage over Selmy.

my vote for Oberyn Martell. The dude had the "Mountain" beat despite not wearing any armor and drinking before the fight
Viper was a perfect matchup to take out the mountain if he had so chosen to do so. Speed and a spear versus a big slower opponent is a pretty good matchup.
Now had Viper gone up against someone like Jaime, Loras, Barristan, or Dario where they can eliminate the distance gap and close on him then he and his spear would get overwhelmed.
Like any battle, it falls to weapons and ability to adjust. The person we have seen do this best on the show has been Bronn but I never got that feeling in the books.
I would stick with Barristan Selmy in my pick since he seems to be the most intelligent of the fighters and led others so long. He seems like he could adjust the best but his honor might have him lose to someone like Bronn since Bronn is likely to pull a dagger when given the chance. Dirty usually will win a fight if the fighters are close in skill.

Arya. Trained by the First Sword of Braavos. Mentored by the Hound. Educated by Jaqen H'gar. Driven by her lust for revenge, willing and able to fight dirty, capable of warging and/or shape-shifting. Taught politics and strategy by Tywin Lannister. If she lives long enough to grow up, she's unbeatable.

quote:Ned says something to the effect that had it not been for Reed, Dayne would have killed him. As I said in the other thread, the spy footage of the ToJ scene suggests that Reed snuck up behind Dayne and killed him while he was facing Ned.
