re: Did Romero do enough Sunday to send Pap to the bench?

He has said before he does not hit well when at DH. He hits better when he's more involved in the game.
This makes sense psychologically, but we run into problems when Lange pitches. Pap needs to catch for Lange, but taking Pap out every other game could definitely mess with his head trying to get his starting job back.
This problem could be fixed if Deichmann could field ground balls at third, putting Romero at first and Bryce at DH.

Does all this negative talk about Papierski represent a "pap smear"?

I feel like this happens every year. Is Pap REALLY that great defensively? I haven't actually noticed this mythical defensive beast that can't be replaced. I feel like Maineri says it, then the fans in here eat it up and it takes on a life of its own

Keep the lineup like it was yesterday

Well, he's committed no errors and throws out more runners than not. I'd say that's pretty good defense...

I think the difference in their defense is greatly exaggerated based on performance

You asked if Pap was "that" good defensively, I answered. Romero isn't bad, but anyone who thinks he's as good, defensively, as Pap doesn't know baseball.
That said, if you ask whether Romero should be in the lineup over Pap, I think there's definitely a solid argument to be made that he should, just don't use defense as the reason.

Catching for Lange is a tall task and we are lucky to have Pap in that position. The average catcher can't stop 30 balls in the dirt when Lange pitches.
The dilemma is if you'd rather have 1 or 2 more hits per game or let 1 or 2 opponents turn a single into a double by pass ball/steal.

While Romero is not as good defensively as Pap, the difference is not as great as it appeared early in the season. Like several catchers before him, Pap included, they have improved greatly as they adjust to the speed of the game and their throwing technique gets better because the game slows down.
I thought Romero didn't have a very good arm, but it was more a case of many poor throws because he was trying to get rid of the ball too fast.

This is the question and there will be people on both sides. It's really a tough call for CPM.
I've asked why Romero isn't in the everyday lineup before, but I was talking DH. If you ask me who should be the everyday catcher I'd say Pap, but that's just my opinion.

Well, based on performance Pap is the better catcher. It's backed up with stats. It's not a huge gap, but it's there.
Also, as BIWO has said, I don't think Romero would handle catching Lange nearly as well as Pap does.

Yeah except those 1-2 hits are usually accompanied by 1-2 runs

I don't think Romero just can't catch with Lange. That seems like a far cry imho

Pap is better at the things that don't show up on the stat sheet such as framing pitches and handling a pitching staff. Things that the coaches keep a record of in the dugout but doesn't show up to the fan watching the game. Romero isn't a bad catcher at all he is actually very good. I would say Pap is slightly better at blocking balls and quicker from mitt to release on the throw, but Romero has the better arm. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having 2 quality catchers and that will help LSU come post season play.

Honestly, I don't think there's a right or wrong call, it's just a preference. Some coaches are willing to go with the better hitter and sacrifice a bit on the defensive side, some are not.
CPM is apparently one of the latter.

Hasn't Pap thrown out a higher percentage of runners on many more attempts?
ETA: He has. That kind of shits on your entire statement.
I think Pap went 2/11 in throwing out baserunners vs. TAMU. Let him catch Lange and then come in after the 5th or 6th to catch the relievers mid-week to get some late inning AB's.
No offense to the kid but it's Pauline's love-affair with him (remember he tried to force feed him last year even with Kade Scivicque starting out and staying red-fricking-hot at the plate and defensively) that's kept him afloat for the most part.

So Pap throws out more base stealers, and has had to catch Lange all season long which is a HUGE chore with his breaking ball and general wildness (33 BB, 13 WP, 4 HBP in just 55.1 IP). Both Romero and Pap has 1 passed ball.
Not saying Romero can't catch Lange, but that would be a very tall order. I'm not against Romero catching more games, but I think Papierski absolutely needs to catch Lange. There isn't much of a doubt Pap is at minimum, slightly better defensively than Romero. We can't be having more wild pitches/passed balls with Lange being how he is this season if we want to win when he pitches.
I mean in the end this is a damn good problem to have.

Papierski will still be catching Lange at a minimum and probably Poche' because he is the receiver that they both are comfortable with at this time.
