Update for all those who care: We have purchased a vehicle!
My wife and I bought a 2013 Volvo S60 T5 Platinum with just over 40,000 miles for $17,500. It still has 10,000 miles on the original manufacturer's warranty. We also purchased an additional MPP for 3 years/36K miles for $2,200 - putting our total cost at $19,700, or right under our budget. We have free regularly scheduled maintenance from the dealership for 5 years and a free tank of gas any time we stop in as well. This car provided every single thing on our wish list other than the backup camera, which would be a great feature but oh well.
I know a lot of people were discouraging me from purchasing a Volvo, but I can honestly say I feel like I got a deal. Plus, it is exactly the car my wife wanted. Happy wife happy life. You can't beat the safety features of a Volvo, and that is an important thing for us as we start our family as well.
Thank all of you guys for giving me advice, direction, and challenging me to seriously think about this decision. I'll be back for more advice next time
