Orders for new big rigs plunged and inventories of unsold trucks soared to their highest levels since just before the financial crisis, as uncertainty about future demand and a weak market for freight transportation weighed on truck manufacturers.
This seems odd to me

It shouldn't, oilfield transportation makes up a large percentage of freight in the industry, lack of oilfield freight has resulted in widespread reduction of freight rates throughout the country, so much so that a lot of these smaller, mom and pop trucking companies have trucked themselves out of business. Cheap freight doesn't pay the note on $150,000 shiny new big rig.

Has a lot to do with the DOT mandating that they run electronic log books in any Commercial Motor Vehicle that was made after the year 2000. A lot of companies and drivers are paying to replace the engines and restore the older model trucks in order to not have to abide by the DOT mandate.

It was only about a month or so ago that Caterpillar announced it was ceasing all production of their on-highway trucks.
Say goodbye to the CT660

They kept going longer than I thought.
Glad I got the last year of the Cat RV engine.

Nope. I remember the day the memo came down from corporate. It was light a lighting bolt from a blue sky.
