I know this is very Utopian of me, but that should become a community issue. The community should put that person out of business on their own by voting with their dollar.
I simply don't trust that this would happen across the board, which is why I feel it's best to be mandated by law. This is the core of our disagreement

The minimum wage protects the works. It isn't meant to be a "living wage" for a family, but it should be high enough to where a person living a very meager lifestyle can try to make ends meet.
FDR said "living wage".
quote:
In my Inaugural I laid down the simple proposition that nobody is going to starve in this country. It seems to me to be equally plain that no business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country. By "business" I mean the whole of commerce as well as the whole of industry; by workers I mean all workers, the white collar class as well as the men in overalls; and by living wages I mean more than a bare subsistence level-I mean the wages of decent living.

What I'm saying is that this increase will only speed up the rate that the California cost of living rises
That I agree with.

If Obama gave that same quote today, this board would need to be shut down
The definition of living wage today is also much different than it was 70 years ago because technology has changed so much.

bright side, maybe all the minimum wage earners in Louisiana will just move to Cali.
Yea, let's go even further and kick everyone out who isn't in the the oil field and making $70k+
We'll even include gays, millennials and John Bel Edwards as bonuses.
What could go wrong?

Well...How about adjust it with inflation at least?

Because communities that have higher levels of poverty also have higher rates of crime, substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, violence, and social unrest among other things. There is hard data to back up those claims.
so you are saying a poor community should just raise the min wage and they won't be poor anymore? I would love to know how that works business owners already must be struggling since their customers are poor now you want to raise their labor costs and what put them out of business?

Small increases don't have such drastic effects on the economy as a whole. Louisiana is talking about raising the minimum wage from $7.25 to around $8. Do you think that number would bring about the same consequences as going to $15?

It is nice that you have skills that are worth more in a field unrelated to your education and prior experience. I just hope you get enough personal satisfaction from using those skills that you won't regret not being able to use the skills of your education and prior experience, assuming they made you happy.
Meh...I use my skills every day, just in a different industry. I have my reasons for staying in my current field, with my current employer and even in my current job that are completely unrelated to the job or the pay offered.
Thank you for your concern

Just another reason I don't go to California. How much will a Big Mac cost now?
Will be the same. Robots work cheap.

a metric frick ton But it may not all be bad. My sister ordered a chicken sandwich today and got back with a hamburger. Here's hoping the cyborg's notice the difference.

I'm asking Chicken to start a "Let's bitch about California" board. Each post would start with " I don't live there, never been there, don't work there, nor vacation there, but this sucks abt Cali..."
See you in May BB so you can experience the pain of the hellhole that is CA.
I think at least 10% of OT covers this. If we added an " Is this trashy?" Board it would take another 25%.

no and I also don't think making $8 an hour will have any noticeable impact on the workers who are making $7.25...no matter what ANY business owner that employs min wage workers is going to try to maintain whatever percentage they currently pay for labor...if not they risk going out of business.

that won't happen when they make $15 an hour
Posted on 3/31/16 at 3:51 pm to Topwater Trout
Understandable. It's a balancing act for sure and if you tip the scale in either directions, someone is going to be negatively affected just the same as someone is going to benefit.
