Didn't the city get two of the monuments listed in the national registry of historical places within the last 20 years? That's the thing I don't understand. Asking for protection then turn around to fight for removal.

If you can link me to a single post of yours declaring that the statues need to come down in New Orleans before that idiot shot up that church and just so happened to be in a picture with a rebel flag
Sorry buddy. Your talking points will miss the mark with me.

Assuming that the 6-1 committee vote in favor of removal even comes close to representing the opinions of New Orleans voters, I'd say that the justification is complete.
At City Council meetings there were supporters of the monuments remaining and African Americans were included in that group.
WDSU took a poll and 97% of people wanted the monuments to remain.
WWL had a story about another poll which favored keeping the monuments: www.wwltv.com/story/news/2015/10/02/wwl-tvadvocate-poll-majority-oppose-removing-confederate-monuments/73226396/
Sorry but it's not linking properly.
Mitch is doing nothing but grandstanding and focusing attention away from paying firefighters millions of dollars owed them for overtime pay, the ridiculous amount of crime in NO, blight and disrepair of streets.
If Mitch really cared what the people of NO think, he'd have a special election to have NO citizens vote on the monuments. They are not Confederate monuments, they are monuments of U.S. Veterans.

Thanks for the info.
(Put https:// in front of your link)
FYI my opinion has nothing to with Mitch. He's not my cup o tea.
That said, slavery is a bad thing, and a statue of Robert E. Lee in his defending-slavery-to-the-death uniform is also a bad thing, especially since it basically replaced a carousel. There's just no reason we shouldn't respect our neighbors enough to take it down out of common decency.

U.S. Public Law 85-425: Sec. 410 Approved 23 May 1958
(US Statutes at Large Volume 72, Part 1, Page 133-134)
The Administrator shall pay to each person who served in the military or naval forces of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War a monthly pension in the same amounts and subject to the same conditions as would have been applicable to such person under the laws in effect on December 31, 1957, if his service in such forces had been service in the military or naval forces of the United States.
Additional Note by the Critical History: Under current U.S. Federal Code, Confederate Veterans are equivalent to Union Veterans.
U.S. Code Title 38 – Veterans’ Benefits, Part II – General Benefits, Chapter 15 – Pension for Non-Service-Connected Disability or Death or for Service, Subchapter I – General, § 1501. Definitions: (3) The term “Civil War veteran” includes a person who served in the military or naval forces of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War, and the term “active military or naval service” includes active service in those forces.

For clarity, that info addresses the latter part of the sentence to which I replied; my laughter was directed at the former.

Let Wynton Marsalis remove the statues. He seems to be the driving force behind them since Half Moon consulted him about how they made him feel.
Funny enough that piece of shite is on the jazz fest poster this year. I find it horribly offensive that it is a hideous piece of artwork, and it depicts a racist. Perhaps next year they can have c rays buddy Irvin mayfield on it.

Ever drive between canal boulevard and the 17th st canal, the roads in those neighborhoods are worse than some 3rd world countries I'd imagine. They literally have 2' tall hills in the middle of the damn street. If I lived in that neighborhood I'd refuse to pay the city taxes until that shite was fixed.

Okay so just so we're clear you can't link me to a single writer, protester, blogger, or human being that had a problem with these statues up until this faux outrage started correct? And you wonder why people have a hard time agreeing that a city that is so broke to where they can't fix their roads or pay their firefighters should spend $1,000,000 of tax payer money to remove some f'n pieces of rock that no one cares about. It literally won't do a single bit of good for the city or the people in the city. All it will do is piss away $1,000,000 that we don't have.

common decency
This term along with "common sense" are nebulous, vague generalities that mean very little and are often used by politicians to bypass people's critical thinking filters. What's considered common decency or common sense varies greatly from person to person, regions, backgrounds and time period.
It sounds like you don't believe that removing the monuments will do anything other than placate the desires of black people in the name of "common decency" and make them feel better or possibly less oppressed. What you are advocating amounts to nothing more than cultural marxism. You may be a socialist and are okay with that...I don't know. The councilmen that voted for it are advocating the same thing, which is much more disturbing.
