Mexican border towns

So, I'm going to a wedding in Edinburg in April, and I was thinking about crossing the border just to say I had been to Mexico (never been before). The US State department's travel warnings for Tamaulipas are almost comically dire ( holy shite). It sounds like you will be robbed, kidnapped, sold into sex slavery, and/or murdered just going over there.
Can anyone on the OT speak to how stupid of an idea it would be for a honkey arse anglo to cross over for a couple hours to see the sights? Any of the border towns around McAllen/Brownsville better/safer than others? Will we need a passport?
TYIA

If your plan is to have your life insurances redeemed, it's an excellent idea.

Have you not seen the pictures/videos of chainsaw decapitated people hanging from bridges? Are these really the type of people you would trust not to rob/kidnap/kill you?

You know they find graves full of 50-60 people all the time in these dangerous border towns.

I've heard that those travel warnings are pretty legit. You run a pretty high risk of getting robbed or murdered by going into any of the areas known to be run by the cartels.

It would be incredibly stupid for you to do so.

you do realize that there is a violent civil war going on in that area that makes the middle east look peaceful, right?

They aren't playing. You'd be a moron to risk it. But since you probably will, you'll need a passport to get back into 'Murica if you survive. Even south Texas towns near the border are risky.

I've been across several times in several different places and would not go right now. It's not worth the risk
If you want to say you've been to Mexico book a vacation to Cancun

My brother goes to Acuna for dental work.. but I think it's relatively safe compared to others.
It's a damn shame too. Matamoros was a destination every summer when I was a kid. The market was cool.

Yeah, you'll need a passport.
If you really want to do a short stint in a Mexican border town, I'd recommend going to Big Bend National Park in far West Texas. There's a border crossing station that leads you to a sleepy Mexican village that is safe. It's awkward at most to be the only Anglo in the town, but it's still a cool experience (not to mention a cheap bar) and they accept American dollars.

I used to go to Saltillo (not a border town) all the time but now its become too dangerous. Honestly you are crazy to visit any border town.

It was and to be honest, I don't there's anything worth visiting in a border town now. Everybody is staying away.

Yeah, and the guy with the bateau that ferries you across charges a dollar going in and two dollars to come back. Cool place to have a cold cerveza or two, though.

Used to go to Nuevo Laredo but there's no way in hell I'd go now. San Antonio has a big market where you can buy all the messican stuff.

Worked with a few guys from Mexico and they're afraid of those areas now.

In the late 80's. The LSU basketball band went to Nogales and crossed the border for an evening. Back then, it was pretty safe. We met a mariachi band and hung out with them. We had a blast that day.
Now, they would cut your head off. It's a damned shame what has gone on.
Don't go, it's not safe.

You can watch Cartel Land and then tell the class if you should go or not.
Safe travels if you do decide to go
