A lot of times the quality of albums vary with particular bands and often times it's a function of who the producer is
Who are some of your favorite producers?

Martin Birch had a huge effect on rock and heavy metal, producing for Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, and BOC, among others in the 70's and 80's. Also love Mutt Lange.

Too bad Phil Spector is conducting the train to crazy town inside prison walls... he had a talented ear and mind.

Spector is a nut job but the dude was possibly the most revolutionary producer ever to walk into a studio.
ETA: I love this clip with Spector telling the story of his song being used without his permission. Mean Streets

Those are the first names that came to mind for me, along with George Martin and Jimmy Page. I've never been super impressed with the live Zeppelin I've heard but the first 6 albums sound amazing.

I watched that clip one time on 3 hits of acid. Did you know that Phil Spector is the devil? I didn't either til that day.

Spector's wall of sound technique revolutionized music as we know it.

No prob
For anyone interested Spector, the BBC documentary on him is great. It is on Youtube in its entirety and that clip came from that documentary. The HBO movie a few years ago with Pacino was okay, but that documentary is very captivating. Spector is an interesting little weasel.

How many superstars owe their start to Sam Phillips? He was the man for sure.

Also, Paul Epworth has produced a ton of popular music in the last several years, including, but not limited to the two best selling records in 20 years (21 & 25)
