We all know that the B1G champ and OU have secured a spot. If Clemson or Bama were to lose or both, who would get in?
Stanford (if they win the Pac 12)
ND
OSU
N.C. (if they beat Clemson)
Florida (if they beat Bama)

I think the waiting list right now looks something like this:
Ohio State
Stanford
UNC
Florida
Notre Dame
Too many variables though to even begin to guess.

Bama since they would have beaten themselves obviously. No way Florida beats them straight up.

I think UNC would make it, I also think Stanford would make it if they won the PAC-12.

ND is out no matter what.

If Clemson were to lose, it would come down to Stanford and UNC. I think Stanford would get the nod. Neither of Stanford's losses are as bad as losing to South Carolina.
I think the same would hold if Bama were to lose. If they both lost I think it would be Stanford and UNC. OSU not winning the division kills it for them against conference champs.

So winning 12 in a row, beating the #1 and winning ACC is not better than 2 losses?
I think that if Carolina wins they're in.

I don't know. It's certainly possible, but I think they have to look hard at Stanford and UNC. Personally, I think winning a conference championship game should be a requirement to play for a national championship, but I also thought that was the case in 2011. I don't know if that will hold this season if there is some chaos next weekend.
I could very easily see the committee taking the four best teams, and I don't think that's even a debate right now. Clemson is the only chance the ACC has, and Stanford will be hard to sell with two losses. I think Bama and Clemson take care of business and eliminate any controversy next weekend.

No, not with that schedule and that loss.

If UNC beats Clemson then I'd say they are in.
If Clemson and Florida wins I'd put Stanford in.
If UNC and Florida both win UNC and Stanford may both squeak in. tOSU on the outside looking in since they didn't win their division.

This is a very interesting perspective coming from an Alabama fan. You giving 2011 back? I didn't think so.

why not Clemson even if they lose... they join the 1-loss teams and should be compared against them?
there is precedent for a team losing, even getting blown out in the CCG and getting in the top-2 BCS title game (2003 Oklahoma).

You do realize that being a conference champion is not a criteria for making the playoffs, right?

You do realize this is because everyone knew 2011 was bullshite, right?

I honestly feel like the committee will look for any reason they can to get Ohio State in. A lot has to happen for them to be able to justify it, but it's what they want. A Bama/Ohio State rematch is exactly what they've wanted all year. I don't necessarily agree with it, but there are going to be some sore people around here if the pieces fall into place.

We have 4 teams...and a supposed playoff...nobody cares about records in the NFL - and we're supposed to now be above the AP "undefeated" only criteria of past college football.
If this stupid committee did their homework and actually watched football...regardless of record...
The Pac-12 champ should be in and the SEC champ should be in. Regardless of record.
Then work with the ACC, Big-12 and Big10 last and fight it out among them.
But if you phucking watch football - it's the Pac-12 and SEC to be fair.
The committee should not be rewarding the Boise State model of making these bowl games.
For once, like the March Madness committee - they should evaluate wins and losses on a sliding scale based on conference and schedule.
But right now in CFB, it's as if the March Madness committee would make 29-0 San Diego State #1 and 29-3 North Carolina #5.

It's the SEC and Big Ten, but I agree with everything else. Let the PAC, ACC, and Big 12 figure out who the other two are.
