Battle-hardened troops v. war-weary

Why is it we hear so much about our troops being war weary when in the past experts have always given credit to a military force that is battle-hardened. Serious question as I'm just thinking out loud.

Because we are used to being comfortable these days.

It depends on what you ask them to do. If it is something they think is worthwhile they are battle hardened. If they think it is dangerous and without real purpose, then they will be war-weary.

It's about leadership to be honest.

Top brass/politicians/media are war weary.

Ambrose noted that the progression went thusly:
"It won't happen to me."
"It can happen to me, and I can avoid it with better teamwork, better awareness, etc."
"It will happen, to me, and there's nothing I can do about it."
When a man reached the latter stage, he had had enough.

For the most part, troops are battle hardened and families are war weary.

When you give them ridiculous rules of engagement that put them in danger they are weary. When you let them do what they are trained to do they are hardened.

it is all about the slant that the pundit is trying to impart on the story...
someone who wants you to be proud of the troops and the cause says they are "battle hardened",
while someone who wants you to feel sorry for the troops and be against the effort says they are "war-weary".....

Something of a mixture of these two I think. At some point sight of why they fight is lost. Good leadership can inspire troops and/or pick objectives that inspire the people and troops.

If this is at all a factor it is very minor. War being destructive to people's psyche isn't new.

That's undoubtedly a factor too.

The troops aren't war weary. There may have been a period 07-09 that some were. Those guys got out and the wars are over. There aren't any war weary troops in the US military. That's all spin from leftists.

The mass exodus you allude to was a direct result of poor leadership and horrible manpower planning (such as carrying garrison leadership style to combat zones). The Army in particular has a dysfunctional personnel management system.
There are bigger personnel management issues throughout DoD, overall. Been like that for decades. People write about them, but nothing changes.
As for war weary - garrison fatigue can take the fight out of a military faster than battle ever will. And that is 100% about leadership. People write about it, try to prompt change, but it rarely seems to result in change.
