so many spikes grow into nice little basket rack 6 points by year 2 or 3 and by the time they are 4-5 years old they are a decent buck. If you want to fill the freezer then shoot does.
that's just bad genes man if you getting a basket 6 at 3 yrs old.

Don't hurt the little guy

Garlic salt and Cavenders would do him nicely.

This is assuming the one in the OP is a year old. In my post I said I believed based only on that pic he may be 2. If he is 2, he should be shot. If he is 1, well, there is no reason to shoot a yearling

I cant imagine killing a spike as a manner of buck management unless you are certain of your genetics not having any spikes in the bunch.
Even if that is the case, I cant imagine he can screw up a herd too much in one extra year provided your buck doe ratio is good.

I have more pics to go through. The board seems to be split.
If it were me, I would let any kid shoot him and call it a day. Win win.

You guys are highly discounting the factor of nutrition in this equation. My aunt raises deer. The effects of a diet high in protein, calcium, and magnesium will turn the scrawniest of bucks into very respectable bucks in no time.

Shoot him then make some damn rice
Posted on 11/4/15 at 2:51 pm to bamarep
the only 2 things you can control when growing bucks:
1. Nutrition
2. Allowing them to live to maturity
Genetics play a part and you will never change that on free range deer

I agree. If he is 2 and inferior then you have done a service to your herd. If he turns out to be a yearling and you were wrong I don't think you set back your deer herd that much to even know the difference. Hell, coyotes could take him out tonight and you'll never know the difference.
If he had matching forks and brow tines id be 100% on don't shoot even at 2

Yep. If he's 1.5 yrs, he's the fattest 1.5 yr old buck around these parts.
I'm assuming this is not a Wisconsin or Illinois deer....

Now for all you biologist here , how old is this deer? Yea it's a 1.5 year old so why wouldn't you kill a 1.5 year old spike?
Posted on 11/4/15 at 9:47 pm to Nascar Fan
Cause there is plenty and plenty of evidence tgat a 1.5 year old spike can become one helluva a deer
