Is this a Cull Buck? I don't think it is, but some in our lease think so and said it should be taken. What say you?

I say 2nd year spike, let him walk. If he comes back as funky next year, cull him.

Depends what kind of genetics you have in the area. If majority of the bucks in his age group are bigger than that, cull him. If you don't have enough bucks in his age group to know this for sure, give him another year.

I doubt that deer is ever going to worth a shite. But you don't want deer like that being your criteria on culls. Leaves to much room for error on interpretation

Let him walk for another year. Could be a late bloomer. Rule of thumb amongst quality managers is to give em 3.5 to develop. By that time you'll know what the deer will or will not be. That deer could absolutely blossom next year.
Old wives tale is once a spike always a spike but more and more that's been proven to be a complete myth

Tough one. He's spikes say 1.5 yr old but his body is actually pretty big for a first year buck.
Might as well give him another year, but in the hoof, if say he's not gonna be much in a few years.

I wouldn't take him just for culling purposes....but if you want some meat, I think that would be a good one.

Your neighbor already shot him.

I'm not very familiar with louisiana's deer seasons, but doesn't yalls archery season start around the beginning of October?

Killing that buck will not create trophy bucks on your property. His mom and his brothers and sisters all have the same genes. How do you cull an inferior doe?

His roasts, loins, straps, and rest look tasty. So fire up the grill and have at it

We never shoot young bucks. Just my opinion.

Don't think it'll amount to much & wouldn't want it to breed, so IWSI

Never understood the mentality of shooting spikes. These are free range whitetail with most of them not getting any supplemental food to help enhance their antler growth. I am fortunate enough to have 80 acres of my own to hunt with little to no hunting pressure on the surrounding properties and i keep trail camera photos from year to year and I've seen so many spikes grow into nice little basket rack 6 points by year 2 or 3 and by the time they are 4-5 years old they are a decent buck. If you want to fill the freezer then shoot does.

Based on those pics alone Id guess he is a 2 yr old. In his second year with spikes and no brows Id cull him for sure. Way too many bucks out there that by this point would be a 6 or 8 with way more potential that could spread their seed instead of this guy.
Always the potential he could developed into something but if you have a kid hunting or similar situation and he walked out Id give the go ahead to shoot on that spike way before I would if he was a 6 or even a spike with decent brows
