Dude...3 out of the 4 teams we've played won't be bowling this year....we've played no one.

No one is saying that LSU should have "true balance." The running game is the strength of this offense. No question. But it shouldn't be unrealistic for LSU to avg. more than 90 ypg. This team also has some damn good WRs and a QB that looks like he can really throw it. If you can be effective in both aspects of the offense, then why not be?
quote:
Take Baylor this year, for example. Right now, they are rushing AND passing for 350+ yards per game. Do you really think when they play a team with a defensive pulse they'll be running the ball like that? I don't.
And if they can't run the football, they will still be able to throw it. What happens when someone stifles LSU's running game (at least to some extent)? Your whole argument is premised on the fact that LSU has a dominant defense than can keep them in a very low scoring game. So far the defense has been good, but I wouldn't say it has been a dominant as say 2011. Plus, Special Teams look much worse than 2011.
If you can be effective running and throwing the football, why not be? There's no rule saying you can't be both. A lot of people here look at this argument as an either/or premises. Either LSU has to be a strictly power running team OR a wide open spread offense. Most are just advocating that LSU be effective enough in the passing game to ensure that a team with a great defense can't sell out and completely stop the running game.
This guy gets it

the numbers show that this is an extremely effective offense. LSU currently ranks No. 12 IN THE NATION in yards per play. That's not yards per carry, but yards per play. Here is the list:
It's pretty much because of yards per carry, don't try to sweeten it dude. Usually your passing game is the one that lifts up your yards per play, well, ours lowers it. We average 7.13 ypc (mostly all Fournette), which is 2nd in the country. We average 6.3 ypa, which is 99th in the country.
quote:
We're No. 34 in the nation in the most important offensive stat, scoring offense, just behind No. 33 Alabama by 0.2 points per game.
We are like that only because of Fournette. Harris has 5 total TDs in 4 games, and no other rusher has any scores besides Fournette. Fournette is our offense, just say that and don't try to make us something we aren't.
quote:
Just a reminder, a team considered one of the greatest in the history of college football, 1995 Nebraska, averaged 13.5 passing attempts per game that entire season. They averaged 366 yards rushing per game, for a 7.0 YPC clip. We are currently averaging 336 yards rushing per game, at a 7.2 YPC clip. And we are averaging 15.5 passing attempts per game.
That was 1995, it's 2015 buddy. It's like people also forget the part where these teams they bring up actually had good scoring defenses. They gave up 14.5 ppg, we give up 21.5 ppg. We have yet to play an Ole Miss, Bama, TAMU, a team that is at least in our realm of talent, and that can actually score.
Look, until we start completing/catching passes, we are a 1 player offense (plus blockers), that give up nearly 22 points per game. And we aren't facing teams from the 80s or 90s.
Oh and FYI, Tommy Frazier averaged 8.4 ypa, we average 6.3. Frazier had 17 passing TDs to 4 ints in 11 games. We have 2 passing TDs, on pace for 5.5 passing TDs. We are on pace for 1050 pass yards in 11 games, he had 1362 in 11 games.
That passing game was way better than what we have now, and we only played the worst defenses of our schedule.
That Nebraska team wasn't just a one man show on offense. Four players finished with at least 400 rushing yards, and 8 finished with at least 245 rushing yards. They all averaged insane yards per carry and at least 3 had 9 or more TDs and 6 had 3 or more TDs. They got damn averaged 53 points per game and give up only 14 points per game, which was against all 11 opponents. We average 36 points per game and give up 21 points per game against our weakest competion. We have yet to play Bama, Florida, Ole Miss or even TAMU, who has a better defense than any team we have played.
ETA: when you add in their other passing outside of Frazier, they put up 1762 passing yards and 18 passing TDs in 11 games. That's 156 passing yards per game, which is 61 more yards that we pass per game. They averaged 20.7 passes per game, we average 15.25.
We aren't even close to anything that team was doing. This is as bad as the comparing of what Herschel and Bo did to aid their teams in 80 and 83 that somebody did a few days ago.

I agree for the most part. Besides the drops, my only problem with the passing game is the play called. It seems that 90% of the time it's either a deep pass, or an out to the sidelines. Oh there's that one pass a game to Jeter 20 yards down the middle that I fear for Jeters health on.
I'd like to see more 5-15 yard routes thrown in the mix.

Eventually, we are going to have to use our passing game to win, although I think it may only be against Alabama this season
I agree with this. I just wish our OC/HC would do this
the whole year not just for ONE game every year

I can promise you this:
If we win the national championship, people are not going to sit around and say "but they cant/couldnt pass the ball"
If you can score more points than the other team. Then it really doesnt matter if the ball is in the air 30 times or 3 times.

That's still over a 100 yards. LSU teams have struggled to get past 100 yards passing in recent times. These days I am pleasantly surprised when we do.

First of all, I like your post and agree with almost everything you say.
But the Nebraska stat is misleading. Yes, that '95 team didn't pass a lot but they did average 143 yards passing a game and their starting QB (Tommie Frazier) threw 17 TDs to just 4 INTs. He did what we'd like Harris to do- execute a very heavy run offense that still operates an efficient passing game.

You don't have to promise me shite but I can promise you if we don't win a National Championship because our running game gets shut down and we can't move the chains because of no passing game "who'd a thunk it" is gonna come out of a lotta mouths

You should really post this on the SECR. Their heads will explode at the notion that our offense is very effective

Other teams have also done this successfully.
LSU w/ Mauck
LSU w/ Flynn
tOSU w/ Krenzel
There are others.
We don't need Dan Fouts/Air Coryell ... just need "efficiency" ... make a good, safe throw when needed, move the chains. Keep the D honest. That is all. Let LF7, O-line, and Savages do the rest.

Yes, especially our Aggie friends. They are averaging about 6.5 yards per play at the moment, about a half yard less than our completely abysmal hot garbage of an offense. We are also ahead of Bama in yards per play.

If our passing attack is going to be effective, our WR's need to learn to catch.

Flynn passed the ball 359 times, and LSU passed the ball a total of 442 times. Flynn put up 21 passing TDs, and we put up 29 passing TDs total to go along with 3154 passing yards. That's nowhere near what we are doing now.
Mauck passed the ball 359 times, and LSU passed the ball a total of 402 times. Mauck put up 28 passing TDs, and we put up 30 passing TDs total to go along with 3257 passing yards. That's nowhere near what we are doing now.
Krenzel is the closest thing to what we have done, but even still, we won't pass for 2425 yards like his team did or even 2110 yards like he did, and I doubt we average 8.5 ypa for the year.
Harris would have to average 172.8 yards per game (that is with going to the national championship game) to hit 2110 yards. He would have to average 9.2 yards per attempt for the rest of the season, to reach those goals on 19 pass attempts per game.
I mean it's obvious that you don't understand that OSU only gave up 13.1 ppg and 2003 LSU only gave up 11 points per game. We averaged 38.6 ppg in 2007, and gave up 19.9 ppg, and it caused us to lose twice. So defense was also a big factor in these teams that people keep bringing up.

I thought the addition of coach Tony Ball would wake the WRs up and improve their techniques in blocking and attacking the ball (to catch those 50/50 passes great WRs catch).
I've rewatched the EMU game and I've watched the Bama/UGA OleMiss/UF Ark/UT aTm/MissSt games.
Their WRs are fully engaged in the downfield blocking, very physical. And they leap, dive and fight for the ball/catch.
Our big 2 WRs soft hand block the DBs or often they don't even engage the block just standing in front of them making the DB have to run around them. Then they just look at the DBs make the tackles. No emotions, no effort. The announcers frequently called them out on not attacking the ball being a 6'2/3/4" WR against a 5'11" DB.
Maybe Les will back up his words and send out a new trifecta of wideouts this weekend.
Maybe.

We are 4th to last in the country in passing offense with great talent at the WR position. We all know we won't run the table or much less win the SEC if this stat never improves. The Nebraska team you are referring to was also not a one headed monster like we are in the running game. We are very predictable and this is always own downfall. Any type of passing game would open it up for Fournette even more. So I guess we need the best RB in the country just to even have a chance then.
