it is ironic to me that the NCAA trumpets the student athlete not being greater than the normal student, except of course when it comes to the student athlete gaining compensation for their skill in the open market place. An opportunity that is readily available to the normal student if they have a marketable skill.
But, if a tech startup is poaching some upstart genius college sophomore, how much of what he's getting paid is hinging on the marketability to the outside world he was able to establish by being at that college for the time he was there?
For better or worse, I'd argue this is a collectivist business model that hinges on the fact that a tiny number of outliers my have to delay their gratification to ensure the maximum value for the entire enterprise. Nobody can really operate in a vacuum in such an operation and ensure that the value will be maximized.
People will argue that this leads to some kids "getting screwed," but it's sort of hard to see it that way, if this is really what maximizes the ultimate value of what they are producing (which I haven't seen good arguments to suggest its not).
Of course, the whole "student athlete" discussion can be seen as a farce, but is it really to those who wouldn't make the NFL anyway, as most will not? Hell, any LSU scholarship football player, who simply keeps his nose clean, sticks around, and grinds it out for a degree, can pretty much write his ticket to a pretty decent lifestyle in this state -- often much easier than any other similarly situated run of the mill student.

Yes, let's open the door for every halfway decent player to skip college, go "find themselves" for three years and enter the draft, undeveloped and unproven.
And hey, if it ends in disaster, they can always NOT go to college and get an education like they would have otherwise, even if they'd left early.
And for those who cite Lattimore, his situation was due in no small part to the fact that Spurrier ran him into the ground. Les and other coaches like him don't do that.

the opportunity cost to be there was covered when he paid tuition or earned a scholarship.
we arent really talking about the opportunity, we are really looking at the value and ownership of a unique ability or a valuable productivity

Fournette likely grew up his entire life being an LSU fan
Clowney is from South Carolina.
You DO realize that Clowney didn't actually sit out the year don't you?

frick these sportswriters...
Even if Fournette with the Heisman and a National Championship, why wouldn't he want to come back and try to win both again?
They don't understand the mentality of an athlete and the drive to play.

However, I do wish Fournette could profit off of the obscene amounts of money that are being made off of him right now.
You say this as if he is the only reason people watch LSU.

but Fournette should be able to sign a shoe deal with Nike right now. Or at least do local ads for a Ford dealership or something.
Too big of a Pandora's Box. You do this and you WILL have universities and local businesses colluding to offer endorsement deals as a recruiting tool and big companies trying to steer kids to schools that they think will gain them more exposure.

But a huge part of that value for an athlete in a professional team sport hinges on maximizing the value of others who are playing that sport as well. Therefore, there should be a strong desire to ensure the continued maximization of the collective value. I'd argue Fournette's present value is best maximized by the present system in place. I've yet to see a good argument that would show upending that system would create something of greater value in the present or the long run.

You just described what Florio is...A douchebag, shite stirring , ambulance chasing trial lawyer.

This is about the best reason for a more balanced run/pass offense that you can come up with. If you run Fournette 30 times a game, he will eventually wear out. A player that is tired and worn out is more likely to come up with an injury. Did anyone notice how much he was gasping for breath in the Syracuse game? I know what kind of injury he sustained in the second half but it was happening well before then.

So dumb.
Yeah LF should let down his school, team, teammates, family, and state next year and not play. Smart move. I'm sure the NFL is looking for players that would do that.
And saying that he won't gain anything by playing is retarded. He could lose some stock by NOT playing.
And LF would NEVER do this either. Just not in his nature. Especially considering we are set for a big time run in 2016. We're gonna make a run at it this year as well, but most of our top players are sophomores and were a part of that 2014 recruiting class with LF. They will be JRs next year and primed for a great season.
Just take out a hefty insurance policy, ball out, win a Natl Champ and a Heisman, and then go pro. Boom. Problem solved.

Talking about when he was squating down on the sidelines? He got hit in the nuts and was fine.
And hasn't looked worn down at all. He's averaging 24carries per game. Not like we are feeding him the ball 35 times a game.

Right, Where were all these BOZOS when ADRIAN PETERSON was in school. I don't recall outrage over him playing COLLEGE ball?

If they aren't good enough the market will weed them out. NFL teams aren't going to waste draft picks on guys who they don't think can help them fairly early. It should be completely up to the player as to whether or not he wants to skip college. The NFL will let him know very quickly whether that was a good idea or not. It's not the NFL's job to protect prospective employees from poor decisions.

What's keeping them from going to college if things don't work out? Maybe they lose out on a full-ride scholarship, but that's the choice they made. Still, it's not like getting a college education is completely off the table just because they chose not to attend at 18 years old.

His situation was due to the fact that their were two freek hits that destroyed his knees. Any player, especially RBs, are one play away from a career ending injury. That can happen whether the guy carries the ball 30 times a game or 3 times a game. All it takes is ONE freek hit.
I'm not saying LF would even consider the idea of sitting out next year. However, I would certainly understand why he would if he decide to do so. The opportunity to make that kind of money is rare. If the biggest risk to making that opportunity a reality is a serious injury, then why not take steps to eliminate the risk? We all make decisions that are in our own self-interest. However, some here are angry at the thought that a kid would do the same thing for himself. The reasoning is completely selfish. "I want the team I pull for to be the best that it can be. Therefore, YOU should make a decision possibly adverse to YOUR own self interest just so MY self interest can be fulfilled"

It happens every few years. It's an easy hot take that'll stir up a couple days of conversation. People shouldn't take it too seriously.

But what pisses me off is that the same people preventing him from making what he is worth on the open market, but denying him access to that market then use their considerable media influence to then bad mouth someone else for denying him his earning potential. The NFL doesn't want Fournette to sit out for his benefit, they want all of that free marketing and development at no cost and no risk. Now that he's good enough, they want to pressure him in to stop playing to protect their non-existent investment in him.
Florio can go get fricked.

gurley almost got knocked out of first round last year with injury and he certainly lost money due to injury.
With the way rookie contracts are set in the NFL, it isn't that big of a jump in salary; more about the guaranteed money. The biggest affect to LF when he enters the draft is the fact that teams are moving more to a RBBC and have devalued the position. Sure, they want a top tier RB, but there won't be many 25-35 touches per game RBs out there.
