Hello Amigos,
I have got an offer to work in Hillsboro, OR (Portland). I am currently in Gilbert, AZ (Phoenix).
I flew in and out of the area so did not get the chance to really do much exploring.
Wife and I are mid 30's. No kids. We like the outdoors(kayak, ski, camp), going to concerts, golf and I like good beer.
Some of the things I like about the east valley here in PHX are nice, new developments as far as real estate. Schools are very good. Great infrastructure.
What are some of you travel experts thoughts on both places?
Do all the gawd damn hippies in Portland make the place insufferable?

Its the homeless/crazies that make downtown Portland annoying.
Otherwise its awesome. But Ive only been there between June and September

I've never been to Portland, but my time in Phoenix was miserable. It isn't a bad city, but you can do much better. And I love AZ... Sedona, GC, Tucson.
Go for it, young man. Get out of that concrete jungle.

Out of those two, I prefer Portland mainly because of the outdoor opportunities. I think it's a better beer town as well. Both of those areas offer great golfing, despite the fact that Portland gets something like 60% of Phoenix's yearly sunshine totals.

No worse than the drunks in Tempe. Never been in Gilbert proper, though.

Everything basically shuts down at 10PM in Gilbert/Mormontown unless you go to downtown Gilbert, and even then it's a quiet "date night" atmosphere.

Yeah Gilbert is not partytown. For a married dude like me...that is not a problem.

yes, I'd move to Portland from almost anywhere in the country

Whether you move depends on what you want. I have lived all over the country and am glad I did.
Some people want stability and avoid change.
Others get bored and seek change.
Even though I had never been there before, I packed up everything I owned and moved to Phoenix.
I could take short trips to Los Angeles, San Diego, Tucson, Sedona, Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. It is much cheaper this way than paying for plane tickets and hotel rooms and car rental while paying rent/mortgage and a car note in Atlanta.
Each part of the country has it's own good points and bad points. I can't tell you Portland is better than Phoenix because what I like may not appeal to you.
I enjoyed my time in Phoenix but it was so hot so much of the year!
On the other hand, I hated the 36 inches of snow in Minneapolis/St Paul!
It snowed so much that the MetroDome collapsed!

Yes, possibly you'll have the issue of not seeing the sun for weeks at a time in Portkand that some folks get but the total package of Oregon is worth the risk. Go and have fun. I've got a cousin originally from NC who's been there 20 years and will die there.

I have not lived in either, but I have heard enough good things about Portland that I would move there. I would be curious what the winters are like there, though.
Also, does the offer include anything about selling your house for you? Is AZ's housing market still down?

The winters are relatively mild is my understanding.
The offer does not include selling the house.
The AZ housing market has recovered nicely.
I bought in 2010 when the real estate here was obliterated so I stand to make a nice return.
of course real estate there is significantly more expensive, so it would all go right back into another home.
Thanks for the input folks.

Absolutely. So much beer. And an excuse to buy an Audi Allroad to stand out from the Subarus.
